Build a Franchise Season 4 Offseason- Bubble Elite 8 (Philadelphia @ Dallas Tuesday 9PM)

FREE AGENCY ANNOUNCEMENT

- Free agency will begin three days after the completion of our college draft. Either October 17th or November 14th depending on the vote to determine our draft date.

- Free agency will be run just as in years past using a FA destination metric to determine franchise desirability. The four criteria for this metric are "winning franchise", "star player", "player happiness" and "youth/future". All rankings will be posted and made public during the roster freeze time prior to our college draft.

- Teams can offer a maximum of five years to any player that they hold "Bird rights" on.

- Teams can offer a maximum of four years to any player that they do not hold "Bird rights" on.

- Teams can spend up to the salary cap (or their maximum free agency bid) on any player that they do not hold "Bird rights" on.

- Teams can go over the salary cap by a total of 10% to resign their own free agents that they hold "Bird rights" on. The current salary cap is $1030. A team may go over the cap by $103 and spend up to $1133 only when resigning their own players that they hold "Bird rights" on.

- Example of the above: A team with $100 in cap space and three of their own "Bird right" free agents may spend the $100 in cap space first on another teams free agent and then resign their own player(s) using the $103 available by going over the cap. A team may not resign their own players and get to or over the salary cap and then sign another teams free agent. Once you hit the salary cap ($1030) you may not sign a free agent other than your own "Bird right" free agents. Order is important when signing free agents. Take roster holds into account when making offers.

- A team may offer as many contracts as they have roster space/cap space for as long as they do not violate the salary cap in their offer. See example above on the order and process when determining which free agent offers you want to make.

- All teams with cap space will be free to negotiate with any and all free agents listed on the free agent page at any time once the designated time and day is given. I will announce that as soon as I know day/time. All offers made prior to the scheduled time will be left unopened and deleted.

- Sign and trades will be allowed for the first time during this free agency period. Please read the S&T rules located in the Rules section of our main BaF thread that is stickied on the forum.

- Cap management is an essential part of running your franchise. Once you are at/over the salary cap you will no longer be permitted to make any trades unless you are shedding salary. Take into account upcoming draft pick salaries also when determining whether it is wise to exceed the salary cap. No players that add any salary can be added (via trade, free agency, or draft) once the salary cap has been exceeded. This could extend into the 2021 offseason potentially.

- There will be more added to this as we get closer to the college draft and the beginning of our free agency period. If you have any questions regarding this initial free agent post, feel free to ask or PM.

Spoiler:
Example of proper free agent offer:

Team with $100 in cap space, six open roster spots and three "Bird right" free agents.
Initial cap space= $930

Your PM subject should have your team name and either players name if you are making one offer or team name and "multiple players" if you are making offers to multiple players.

PM SUBJECT- TEAM X- PLAYER/MULTIPLE PLAYERS

BODY OF PM-

OFFER PLAYER A (Other teams free agent)- $72/4 years
OFFER PLAYER B (Other teams free agent)- $23/3 years
OFFER PLAYER C (Other teams free agent)- $2/1 year

($97 is maximum amount available taking into account the $3 roster holds for the remaining three roster spots)

OFFER PLAYER D (Bird right free agent)- $60/5 years
OFFER PLAYER E (Bird right free agent)- $30/5 years
OFFER PLAYER F (Bird right free agent)- $15/3 years

These offers will bring the teams salary cap to $1133 if all offers are accepted. It is up to you to manage your cap. If your math is wrong it potentially could void any and all offers.

Voting on when to hold our draft is still open. It will remain open until Saturday September 26th. At that time whichever side has the majority will determine when our draft is. At this point the leave in October group is ahead 6-5. If the actual draft remains in October then this vote will be voided regardless of the outcome and we will keep our draft as it is scheduled. If I missed any teams votes over the past few days please let me know.

Also, the two other rule change proposals failed. Neither got enough support to pass so we will just have the one new rule change for the 2020-21 season.

Thank you Bish! I have two questions.

First one is about timing:

Say I have a Bird FA that I want to retain, $100 to spend, and 6 open roster spots. I send an offer for:

Player A (non-Bird): $65/3
Player B (Bird): $45/1

Is this an illegal bid because I went over the cap before making minimum roster size OR can I sign $1 guys up to max roster & $1133 after breaking the cap for a Bird player?

I see an issue if it's the former because I then basically have to fill out my roster before I can use my Bird rights BUT many Bird players will be likely decided on early in the process. If another team makes an offer to my guy before I'm able to fill out my roster, I lose him without being able to make my Bird bid. Even if I make enough bids under the cap to meet minimum roster size before my Bird bid, if I lose on any of them then my Bird bid is not valid.

I see another option where the bid is valid BUT bidding remains open on a player in this case until the GM that holds Bird rights can make minimum roster size OR another team beats the bid and there is no counter by the Bird team. They continue to build out the roster under the cap and the Bird bid becomes a separate pot of sorts.

Second one is about above cap trades:

Cap management is an essential part of running your franchise. Once you are at/over the salary cap you will no longer be permitted to make any trades unless you are shedding salary.

Is it equal or less cap or less cap that you can take back? I thought it was the former.

Regarding your first question, from what I gathered, it's the former. Which is specifically why I acquired the following players to meet my minimum roster size...

• Rodney Hood- $25/1 year
• Landry Shamet- $9/1 year
• Alex Len- $4/1 year
• Royce O'Neale- $1/1 year
• Džanan Musa- $1/4 years ***
• Garrison Mathews- $1/3 years [activated off my EL]
• Rayjon Tucker- $1/1 year [activated off my EL]

...setting myself up to be able to negotiate with my bird rights players at the onset of free agency without having to worry about wasting time filling open roster spots on non-bird rights players first.

This is a free agency where you kind of have to come out with strong offers right away and try to avoid bidding wars as that could potentially cost you other players. Or you could intentionally get into a bidding war for a player knowing it could cost the other GM the opportunity to bid on another player. All comes down to the strategy you impose and how much cap space you have to implement it.

Me too. He's super scrappy, and the Knicks need that right now at the pg spot. Hopefully we start the season next year with a couple of new guys at pg.

Is this an illegal bid because I went over the cap before making minimum roster size OR can I sign $1 guys up to max roster & $1133 after breaking the cap for a Bird player?

This would not be an illegal bid because you have not violated the cap here. If you sent this bid in as you wrote it, player A's contract offer is made using your available cap space. If you had the leading bid with this $65 offer you would be left with $35 in available cap space or a $31 max bid due to the remaining five roster holds. The second offer of $45 (assuming it's the leading bid) would also not violate the cap. You are going over the cap to sign your own Bird right free agent with that offer but not by more than the 10% you are allowed so it would also be legal. However, in doing so, you would then relinquish your ability to use that remaining $31 and would be forced to fill out your roster with $1 players. Also, the minimum roster size requirement is 13 not 15. In your example since you would be at 11 players with these two successful bids, you would only be forced/allowed to sign 2 additional players to satisfy the minimum roster requirement.

My remark on timing is more in the regard of if you knew which second/third/fourth/fifth "non-Bird" FA's you were interested in you could potentially make more offers at once and give yourself a better chance of signing those player(s). By making the offer(s) a part of this initial offer and using the entire $100 for the five open roster spots you have the option of signing more than just $1 players you'd be stuck with if you made those two successful bids in your example. The order that you submit your free agent offers could effect your ability to sign additional players depending on cap space, roster holds/spaces and if your bid is successful.

Yes, it should have read that no transactions of any kind will be allowed which add salary once you are at or over the cap. You could conceivably make a dollar for dollar trade which would be legal.

Hope this answers what you were asking. This free agency is definitely a work in progress so if anyone sees any other potential issues feel free to bring them up in the thread or via PM.

Thanks! That seems fair.

I would assume that the GM would then get to resolve the $65 bid if the Bird bid is resolved first? I.e. finish the bidding war up to the cap + additional $1 slots.
