Yeah.. when I saw him struggle to post and get blocked by 6’3 Corey Joseph that was all I needed to see to reach this conclusion

Yes and no.

If we keep playing him off the bench and running post ups for him like he's Embiid or Jokic, he will be playing in Turkey by 2024.

No, because we need to see what he looks like with Quickley, Burks, RJ and Mitch lineup, which apparently we're never even going to try.

Y’all muffagahs always have to find a Knick to bash. I hated the pick, but this type of thread is flagrantly premature. It'll be years before we can accurately make judgment.

He's turning 23 in March, it shouldn't take years to find out if the most NBA ready player from the draft can actually play or not.

Sorry. I gave Frank 3.1 years and he's a bust.

I'm going for early implementer this time.

Just posted the below on the Sacramento postgame thread:
I really wanted Halliburton instead of Obi and SGA instead of Knox. Not only do I think they're better players (and did when they were coming out of college), but they're guys I just really like to watch play basketball, and I would have liked to enjoy watching them play ball for my team.

BTW, Frank is half a year younger than Obi. So let's let him get to at least as old as Obi is now before judging ;-).

Obviously (at least I think it's obvious), it's too early to call Obi a bust or know what he'll turn out to be, but I think it's still fair to express disappointment.

Sure, if Obi came out of the gate playing like the second coming of Amar'e I'd be loving it. But when there's guys on the board I think are really good and that I just think have cool games that are fun to watch and we pass on them, then for me, the guy we did pick has a little higher bar to clear for me to really get behind him.

Watching Obi so far, my biggest impression is that he needs to be a reliable 3pt shooter to become a solidly positive player. If he's not going to do work inside, especially against smaller matchups, and doesn't have the handle to beat defenders facing up, and his D is not a plus attribute, then he's got to be a knockdown shooter. And from what I've seen, I think he has a better chance of improving his shooting than making a leap in those other areas.
Just because it happened to you, doesn't make it interesting.

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

Yesterday I was lying; today I'm telling the truth.

I love all the contentious topics.

The counterpoint is he had a year of JUCO or prep(?) - one of those, and then was still effectively a college "sophomore"

So, based on that, and I guess reclassing somewhere?

Ah, here we go:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Obi_Toppin

Toppin opted to enroll at Mt. Zion Preparatory School in Baltimore, Maryland for a postgraduate year.

Toppin redshirted his true freshman season after being ruled academically ineligible to play.[5] As a redshirt freshman, Toppin led the Flyers with 14.4 points per game while averaging 5.6 rebounds per game and was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Rookie of the Week seven times.[6] At the end of the season, Toppin was named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year and to the first team All-Atlantic 10, the first freshman to do so since Lamar Odom in 1999.[7][8] Following the end of the season he declared for the 2019 NBA draft, but did not hire an agent.[9] After working out for several NBA teams, Toppin opted to withdraw from the draft and return to Dayton.[10][11]

So, and I had speculated on this before - he really only has 2 years of college play, BUT he has those 2-3 extra years of "life on the planet playing basketball"

On the one hand, maybe we should judge him more like a graduating sophomore, on the other hand, expect he'd be ahead of that, since he's 3 years older.

Still was a bad pick
