Figured we should start and All Star Weekend thread with the news that Obi will be in the dunk contest.

I'm guessing RJ and IQ will be named to rookie and sophomore teams.

And Julius our all-star.

They scrapped the Rookie Challenge Game, but it's ok we'll be there next year with our Cade boy.

I know it would be purely on paper but they should still announce selections for both teams.

I'm probably in the top 1% of Knicks fans that still has high hopes for Obi and likes more of what I've seen from him than not - I don't think he's a bust, and despite the slow start, think he's got good upside on a quality team. I think he will be a significant player in the league because he does multiple vitals things well/has a strong BBIQ.

However, one of the aspects I'm most down on him over is actually his dunking. He doesn't seem anything close to the top of the charts, high-flying, acrobatic dunker he was heralded as at the draft. Not having anything to do with his teammates not being able to find him, either. I'm talking about his actual dunking. He cuts really well and can certainly do SOME things when it comes to showing out on the yam, but he hasn't struck me as being anything mind-blowing when he throws it down.

I really hope I'm wrong, but I'm more inclined to think his dunk contest showing will be a straight up letdown rather than inspiring. He's less like a showman dunker, and more an actual quality basketball player, than I thought he would be coming into the season.

Wait until he gets a breakaway opportunity and puts it between his legs to throw it down.

Here that baseline east bay funk dunk from above in slow motion (which should make it look even better). It's cool. It's good. It's just not superlative to me. The best dunkers get both really high AND have that magical glide/float. From what I've seen so far, Obi doesn't seem to have that.

Meanwhile, at the same practice that Obi did that, DSJ did this for their little dunk competition, and MY GOD...

Stanley got bunnies from last night, I think he'd be the fav.

Obi is a struggle dunker (probably the wrong words) but he's not a natural leaper.

When he got drafted, I was hearing Kenyon Martin / Amar'e type athleticism. Obi is nowhere near those guys and those guys had major knee surgeries and were still A1 athletes.

I don’t know what the hell you’re watching, but this is a terrible take

Cassius Stanley is going to be real hard to beat. Even for NBA players. Stanley has a crazy combination of hops, explosiveness and power in his dunks that drive fans and judges crazy. Stanley has the record for max vertical at Duke beating out Zion Williamson's 45 with a 46" vertical. Now if it was just the vertical then it may not be a big deal but Stanley is also IMO the most powerful dunker in college basketball last year. The power and explosiveness of dunks along with the vertical is going to be tough to beat.

There was some other dude on the pacers I'd never heard of that was throwing down some sick dunks the other night. Edmond Sumner. I was like where tf did this guy come from, he was jumping out of the building

Simons can dunk? Did they mistake him for Ben Simmons

Would be my fave competition if they could make it somewhat challenging for a professional basketball player

Big players like Obi look worse because their air time is less than smaller guys he doesnt even need to jump high to dunk

It’s a good point. I guess they’re staying away from trick shots and also don’t want the players to look bad since ultimately it’s a showcase. But yeah for these guys it’s not hard.

Give me a tricky dribbling parkour rather than simple straight line around two cones at least, a platform where players would actually want to showcase their skills
