he was someone that was aggressive and charismatic in his delivery that is very very very difficult to pull off. Special talent! Sad news and he is a local guy too which hurts just a little more.

Loved those Damien songs. Too bad he couldn't control his drug habits. Ruins a lot of great entertainers...as well as everyday people that no one cares about.

Damien is so great.

I was talking to my wife about this last night trying to explain to her what made him different. This wasn't a traditional case of entertainers who got ruined by drugs. X didn't change when he got fame, he was always that same dude from the streets. He came in with a drug demon, and he left with one. Remember, it took him YEARS to get a record deal - he was close to 30 when his fame whirlwind began. He wasn't corrupted by the money and fame, which led to spiraling drug use; he'd had the issue all along, fame or not. It was a part of his persona, his pain, and what made his music so emotionally explosive and raw.

Some of the most enjoyable moments for me over the years with DMX and his music was when we'd get candid peaks into him being happy. Knowing how aggressive, tortured, frustrated, and angry he was in so much of his music (and life), it made his happiness that much more enjoyable to see. His happiness is some of my favorite sh*t ever. Him holding a plate dancing to MJ after the Verzuz makes me smile every time I see it.

RIP. He had lot of bangers in his later albums. But his first two albums were masterpieces.

Stannis wrote:This is my favorite DMX song:

He has lot of songs like this where his lyrics are like he's trying to speak to God or a spirit. Maybe it was drugs. But I think DMX had many near death experiences or he's contemplated suicide before.

R.I.P X.

Sad how many people with substance use disorder's are having so much trouble getting through the pandemic. As if it wasn't a big enough problem before hand. Stay strong.
There's something about an underdog that really inspires the unexceptional.

This is such a great point, and illustrative of just how insanely forceful X's whole style was on the mic.

This is one of my favorites from my childhood. I remember my friend got the CD and we used to bump this all the time.

Dude was a drug addict. It killed him. Doesn't matter when he became one. He couldn't control it. Having all of that money and fame you claim he didn't care about... didn't help. Just another drug addict. People only care because he was famous.

Sad that he couldn't get help with all of the options he had in comparison to most other drug addicts. That's the tragedy.
