While the New York Knicks and Minnesota Timberwolves are hovering around the .500 mark, they are coming off distinctively different performances in their previous games.

The Knicks look to avoid falling under .500 again on Tuesday night when they host the Timberwolves, who look to reach the break-even point for the second time in 10 days.

New York is at .500 (22-22) for the second time in three games. The Knicks, who were four games under .500 on Dec. 23, are 8-4 in their last 12 games following Monday's disappointing defeat against Charlotte.

After briefly climbing back over .500 with Saturday's 117-108 win at Atlanta, New York trailed by as many as 23 and absorbed a 97-87 loss to the Hornets that snapped a five-game home winning streak.

The Knicks were doomed by a poor start as they allowed the game's first seven points and trailed by 18 at halftime before allowing 35 points in the second half. They also had no answers for Charlotte's Miles Bridges, who scored 38 points, and shot a dreadful 11 of 21 from the free-throw line.

"I guess we were still trying to wake up for the game," New York center Mitchell Robinson said. "We just weren't ready."

RJ Barrett and Julius Randle led the Knicks with 18 points apiece but the Knicks are hoping for better showings from starting guards Alec Burks and Evan Fournier, who made a combined 3 of 13.

The Timberwolves are 5-2 in their past seven games since dropping to 16-20 with a 108-103 loss at the Los Angeles Lakers on Jan. 2.

Minnesota won four straight before consecutive losses at New Orleans and Memphis last week, but it bounced back with a 119-99 win over the visiting Golden State Warriors on Sunday night.

"We don't just want to be in the play-in game," Minnesota's Malik Beasley said. "We want to be set in the playoffs. We're trying to figure out how to get a nice little win streak to get us above the hump."

The Wolves allowed fewer than 100 points for the 13th time and also held the Warriors to 39 percent shooting, marking the second time in the past six contests they held an opponent under 40 percent.

Karl-Anthony Towns totaled 26 points and 11 rebounds for his second double-double since missing six games in the health and safety protocol. The Wolves also won a game where D'Angelo Russell was held to seven points after scoring at least 22 points in three of his previous four games. Anthony Edwards was held to nine after scoring 30 points Thursday at Memphis.

Minnesota is hoping to get another big night from its reserves after Jaylen Nowell finished with 17 points and Beasley contributed 16 to help the second unit score 57 points.

Minnesota is 5-2 in the past seven meetings. New York eked out a 96-88 victory Dec. 28 in Minnesota when Towns was in the protocol along with Russell and Edwards

Miles Bridges looked like he was playing 1 on 1 against Kevin Knox that last game...and when I say 1 on 1, I don't mean a random scrimmage with Perry and crew watching

IQ seems at risk of losing minutes with his shooting issues. He's not really progressed at all this season and now he is hesitating.

I thnik he will turn it around, he is one of the best FT shooters in the league which usually translates to better shooting from the field. Maybe he is struggling because he's a SG playing at PG.

Which team will show up tonight? Will it be the solid defense where everyone hits the open shot...or the lackadaisical non shooting bums we saw yesterday?

We need a PG. Not a C. Period.

My theory is that insane rigid Thibs thinks of IQ as filling his rigid need for a ball dominant D.Rose scorer off the bench.

Turns out, IQ is not D Rose. And Tom T doesn’t adjust.

i think maybe IQ needs a shorter leash in the first half. feel like he'd make better use of his time on the floor. then if he's on, you ride him as a closer. sort of impossible with available personnel rn though

I’d love to see that. But my theory is Thibs will not (cannot?) adjust. His system requires a ball-dominant attacking PG off the bench. For similar reasons of insanity, Deuce is not to be trusted and will not be played except under extreme extreme extreme duress.

I'm not trying to be a dck but you keep claiming Thibs needs to adjust, but what adjustments available to him on this roster would genuinely help that situation? At some point every game the bench has to play together. That's really unavoidable. Without Kemba and Rose this team has exactly 0 natural PGs... Deuce is not a good NBA pg right now and can't be relied on. We saw that when he got 2 starts with heavy minutes and did jack chit with them lol. He was a 2nd round pick for a reason. I like his archetype... He's not ready yet.

He's already adjusted RJ's rotation so he at least plays a little bit of the 2nd quarter with the full bench unit to help alleviate the issues you mentioned.

You could say start IQ... Fine, but then who is ball handling the 2nd unit? Burks? Ok, but everybody and their mothers complains about Burks not being a PG and you want him to do that job with less talent around him? Not a recipe for success either.

IQ has to do this job until one of those guys comes back. It's good for his development anyway... A coach can only adjust so much when the team lacks an actual lead ball handler with experience on the roster.

The FO went with 2 broken down players to run the point. Thibs played them 40mpg and broke them. Good plan. Thibs also refuses to play the only other PG on the roster...no matter how bad the team looks. He is a moron. Deuce had a phenomenal game then...Covid. He came back and had 5 weak minutes...in his FIRST GAME BACK...never to be seen again until 1 minute left in a blow out...where we needed a PG. THIS is why we aren't a better team. Add in Randle/Evan on ridiculous contracts getting ridiculous minutes...and you have a recipe for disaster.

i can imagine shammie rollin outta bed, scratchin his bum as he walks over to the kitchen to microwave some hot chocolate, then walkin back to his computer to post the gamethread first thing in the morning  and they say grumpy people aren't cute

and here i was prepared to make tonight's gamethread for a change of pace only to see that he has already promptly crafted one! this seems to be becoming a more and more common theme recently - do i dare say we should come to expect this?! dare i ask that mayhaps shammie even enjoys making them?? i think he does folks!

I'd say that's what it is.
He's thinking too much because the coaching staff pushed learning PG skills on him, not necessarily a bad idea, but not the best for his game in the short haul. And maybe at all, but I get why a team might want a 6'2" guard to be able to play some point and it's not a bad career idea either for IQ.
But he's overthinking now.
