When Kemba got benched, the starting lineup with Burks instead had a 5 point + net rating.

It is now at 0.0.

A. Burks, .E. Fournier, .J. Randle, .M. Robinson, .R. Barrett

365 mins
112.3 ORTG
112.3 DRTG
0.0 NRTG

It’s been 11 games. That is truly amazing.

His most used lineup with Kemba (428 mins) had a -13.8 NRTG.

25% of the total mins played, Thibs has used a lineup that was awful or neutral.

And that sums up our season to date pretty nicely.

Anyway, this 3 man group continues to be great

R. Barrett, .I. Quickley, .M. McBride

80
131.4
84.6
46.8

Literally any player you add to this trio to make a quarter has a double digit NRTG (only small samples as of now since Thibs didn’t play this group together till lately).

Sims 58.8
Mitch 38.8
Cam 50.3
Burks 48.9
Randle 75.4
Obi 32.4
Taj 11.3

The bolded one should have been brought to Thibs attn by now.

And the Knicks could have had and should have had Haliburton and Banes along with Grimes. But they don't. Besides tanking correctly things like this are why other teams have already rebuilt and the Knicks still suck. And this is entirely on this FO for once. Obviously past draft failures haven't helped but now this one has their own crappy record all its own

The Obi pick was beyond ret*rded.

The Knicks had all these Kentucky connections, with WWW, always licking Calapari's balls, Kenny Payne - all this stuff that signaled they were going to keep Randle. And with Thibs as coach, any idiot would realize he's going to play his starters 35 mpg.

So, a team without any decent PG's decided the way to go was to draft a player destined for at most 13 mpg, backing up a player they had strong plans to make their "franchise guy"; a team that featured Elf Payton and Frank/DSJr and Austin Rivers at "PG" to start the season.

There's things the FO does "ok", which in the low bar universe of Knick FO's look good - such as being mostly wise with cap space, not handing out long term contracts even in the context of the completely ass-o-rific offseason of Fournier/Kemba/moar Burks/Noel/Taj/Rose, get additional draft picks, have not traded away picks so far.
Those things are improvement.
Things not improved on?
Team can't assess talent. In the draft or among active players.
It's kind of a problem.

As long as RJ, IQ, Grimes and Mitch play well, I don't care about wins or losses.

Grimes is good. It was a solid pick where he was taken. Unfortunately, Knicks not maximizing other pick opportunities.

Quentin started the season behind RJ, Burks, Fournier and IQ on the wings i.e. a logjam.

He has earned his spot in the rotation.

In 2022, he has averaged more minutes than any player drafted #19-30 (more than any other late first round pick).

During that stretch, he's third in minutes per game behind Tre Mann and Kispert among players drafted #14 to #30.

His minutes are fine.

Payne and Woodson got their payday, saw what it's like around Thibs/WWW/Leon and Perry every day and said "Yeah,we're good, let's get the f*ck out of here, this is going nowhere"

He is only 28th in mpg among rookies and is already better then Fournier with his defense. He def should be getting more minutes and Thibs is without a doubt slow to make changes like that.

Grimes was drafted by a team that already had a logjam on the wings. As a late first round pick, it's only normal he had to earn his minutes in limited minutes to see an increase in playing time. That skewed the numbers a bit, knowing that his minutes were trending up before he got hurt.

I don't know if or by how much Grimes is better than Fournier. Fournier brings valuable shot creation skills, and doesn't commit the same amount of unforced turnovers that Grimes occasionally makes, which are perfectly understandable for a rookie. Grimes is obviously a much better defender, but he's not as versatile offensively. I think the talent distribution on the wings is mostly flat (as of today).

Either way, I don't think it's egregious that Grimes is averaging 22.0 minutes per game in 2022 compared to Fournier's 30.6 minutes per game. Ideally, Grimes would be averaging a bit more, and Fournier a bit less, but I don't think Grimes's playing time supports the sweeping statement that Thibs doesn't play the youth, especially when you consider where he was drafted.

A Westbrook trade that sends Randle and Fournier to LA would help fix this logjam and create more minutes for Grimes at the 2/3 and Cam at the 3/4 for instance (just an example). My point is, I think the FO has to address this logjam on the wings this summer to allow for a bigger role for Grimes (barring win-now moves).
