I say we keep Mitch, but we need a backup wing
The only gettable back up wing is maybe Burke for seconds

cam johnson is not possible unless you expand it to include core players.

My bet is we do nothing because we're basically capped, and we have only garbage we're willing to give up.

I agree. I think they are betting on Mitch. His value is pretty low so, why bother trading him? If he can stay healthy for the year, what he brings to this team or his own value going up is a win/win. High risk/high reward move.

Will they trade Precious before finding that out? Not so sure. We have his bird rights but, I am unclear how that works for S&T this summer with the new apron rules.

Sims has drawn interest. Payne/Shamet could go. All are minis so I don't think we can aggregate them due to the new apron rules. Then we have the rookies. None of these guys make enough money to really wheel and deal for anything.

I don't see much to get excited over at all. We may sign Warren after February or possibly another vet mini. That and Mitch coming back will be the big mid season moves IMO. The only other thing I can think of is the McCullar kid coming back and being the steal of the draft but, how much stock can you put in that?

I think they have enough room under the 2nd apron to do a 2 for 1 (Sims plus minimum) deal and round out the roster after 2 weeks with a vet min signing. But overall, I tend to agree. Would love to pull together a 3 2nd rd picks for 4th year rookie scale guy who didn’t sign an extension (Lakers did this with Rui and Mavs with Grimes), but given the long term apron outlook this is probably a move that is to be made next summer.

We really don’t have enough asset wise to add to Mitch to get a guy who’s impact can match a healthy Mitch, who fills a major need on the roster.

I think the biggest lineup adjustments need to come from the head coach

Precious into the starting lineup and Hart to the bench.

Sims gets backup C minutes until Mitch is back.

We cannot do two for one trades. We need the 14th regular salary and we can't sign anyone extra without going over the apron. Player for player dollar for dollar match trades only is my understanding of the situation. Then at the end of February we can add a vet mini prorated to fit under the cap.

Do the Nets even possess a player who makes what Sims makes for there to be a Knicks-Nets trade around Sims?

Only two players make the salary requirements under the apron rules. Both rookies.

Sims 2.097mil

Maxwell Lewis 1.891mil
Jalen Wilson 1.891mil

Player for player dollar for dollar match trades only is my understanding of the situation. Then at the end of February we can add a vet mini prorated to fit under the cap.

They can have less than 14 players on the roster for 14 days. If they complete a trade on Feb 6 (deadline day) they need to sign a 14 guy guy by Feb 20. It would require them to take less less salary back in a 2 for 1, but it’s possible.

But the lack of tradable salary, combined with the lack of valuable 2nd rd picks, I don’t see much happening.

Also, I don’t see much happening in the offseason where they are going to be very close to the 2nd apron. Currently we have about 11.5mm of space below the 2nd apron with 10 roster spots filled. This allows for use of the taxpayer MLE (or retaining Precious), 2 vet mins and a 2nd rd at 1.2mm. This would leave NY about 500k below the 2nd apron.

I could see a world where they use only 5mm of the MLE (would love Malcom Brogdon in that slot), keep Sims instead of Hukporti (would cost an extra 200k but he comes with full bird rights for a human TPE deal in 26) - which saves an extra 500k. This gives us room to give Precious a 1 + 1 (player option) at $3mm and allows us to keep his bird rights as well.

Towns/Robinson/Sims
Hart/Precious
Anunoby/Dadiet
Bridges/McBride
Brunson/Kolek

5MM MLE
1 Vet Min
2nd Rd Pick

The summer of 2026 - when the Knicks have their first and likely a high 2nd from WAS - and the 26/27 trade deadline, when NY can have trade eligible “human trade exception” contracts created with bird rights in the summer of 26 to exceed the 2nd apron is when we can expect to see real roster movement.

If you’re going to exceed the 2nd apron, why not explode over it. I can see signing Sims and Precious to contracts above the MLE to open up trade options (similar to what PHX did with Okogie to facilitate the Richard trade

Sims + SRP for TPE. We can use that salary to sign other players cut after the deadline. Sounds like something that would piss me off thus plausible.
