Well deserved. Give this man all the flowers, he was the most dominant NCAA player I've ever seen, the greatest Olympian in Men's hoops and was an all time scorer in the NBA.
What a resume.

A Jersey retirement should be reserved for the ones that made an indelible impact on the franchise.
There was some flair there but we should reserve the jersey retirement for all time greats that wore the jersey and made a playoff impact. Otherwise we might as well retire Julius Randle too.

Houston advanced past the 1st round of the playoffs as many as 4 years, including an ECF and Finals appearance. While it was done so with Ewing, Houston was the best shooting guard on the team, and I think his numbers and performance have held up.
Randle had only two playoff appearances with the Knicks and he performed poorly on both occasions
Houston averaged 19 ppg on 45/43/88 shooting splits in 60 playoff games. Extremely underrated IMO and honestly, he was largely responsible for extending Ewing's legacy.
I know Sprewell was the fan favorite and he was looked at more favorably than Houston, but Houston was performing at a high level for 2 seasons before Sprewell had arrived

I wouldn't go that far. But it does set a precedent. If Knicks retire Melo's jersey, they probably have to retire King's as well. Then you have to consider Allan Houston.
Never watched King live, but the numbers for his 83/84 PO look amazing, and I'm sure had something to do with taking a prime Celtics team to a 7 game series. I can't say Melo ever performed liked that in the PO for the NYK.
