OT: Nerdy Thread Resurrection

Post#1 » by KnicksGadfly » Tue Jul 22, 2025 10:31 pm

Alright...someone has to bring this up again. What are you watching? Playing these days?

Watched: Superman - the movie was really good! Probably the best Superman movie I've seen in recent times. Some of the dialogue was cringey ("It's heading toward the city...there are a lot of people over there), but all in all, I enjoyed it a lot.

Playing: Hogwarts Legacy - Took a while to ramp up but it picked up once I started figuring out the game. Lots of random exploration elements, which I enjoy. Most side quests are skippable, which is nice. Glad they didn't lean too much into broomstick racing...think it's fun flying around, but not as fun doing the races.

You guys run a 2k online league for the board? I’m sure I’ve asked this before but this seems like the best place to ask.

Looking forward to this one...too many great games on my list. Still haven't gotten to Baldur's Gate.

This one is also there. I loved the first remake. Thought it was really well-done and a fun experience. I actually went back and played Crisis Core a year ago...didn't expect it to be so emotional for me.

How were Guy Gardner and Mr Terrific in Superman?

My kid won't let me use his damn ps5 to play expedition 33 so im honestly thinking of getting one to play it this winter. Its been highly recommended to me by a few people.

I usually just game on switch. Waiting for a min before I grab the switch 2. Don't feel the need to cop it yet.

As for film/TV I haven't watched anything compelling in awhile. I dont know why but the older I get the harder I find it to lock in the screen.

I prefer to read. am about halfway through book 5 of the storm light achive. Love Sanderson world building, pace, characters, everything really, excpet one big thing. the whole time im reading it I cant help but wish he had a touch of Joe Abercrombie's darkness. It just feels too close to young adult fiction. Makes it hard to immerse into the story.

I got to the end of Act 2 for Expedition 33 and it just wasn't clicking for me

I think it throws a lot at you without really giving enough time to really settle in to the flow before it changes things up again. I get why people like it, it's a very deep and versatile game, but it just wasn't for me. Plus I kinda didn't really like the answers it was giving to the questions it set up, so narratively I wasn't really invested in it after that point. Similar thing with me and the Fromsoft games, like I know they're good and all but I just can't get invested enough in them

I need to read Wind and Truth, problem is I committed to a re-read of the entire Stormlight Archives before reading it and it's been months since I've made any progress on them. Sanderson kind of is who he is though, like I'm fine with it not being dark for the sake of being edgy.

Yeah, i get that Sanderson is who he is and he is exceptional at what he does. I just cant help but feel like im reading or listening to a guy who is vv nice and well behaved. Kinda bugs me. And if I'm reading a story about war/conflict I want it to be a lil more realistic, regarding human nature. Honestly, its just a small complaint. Prolly just a me issue, tbh.

Impressed you did a reread. Those are not small books. I honestly had completely forgot what was going on or who the characters were when I picked up book 5 but I sure as sht wasn't about to reread those tomes.

Preciate your opinion on 33. I was already really leaning no on getting a ps5 anyways. My backlog on the switch is stupid long already. Ill just wait to ground my kid for a week and use his ps5 if I really want to play the game.

Grounding the kid is always the way to go!

I feel like with Abercrombie, I feel like some of his character development is off to me, based on the trilogies I've read of him. It's kinda like GOT the final season, when Daenerys turns bad and you're like wtfook? The evil turn sometimes needs setup too.

I'm currently reading Robin Hobbs' Soldier Son series. Hobbs is a great writer...I loved the Realm of the Elderlings...and she actually finished them, not like some of these authors who can't get us the next book (squint*)

Spoiler:
Mr Terrific was hilarious and pretty badass. Definitely a show-stealer. I think he's getting a bigger spotlight afterwards. I think he does require interaction with other characters, though.

Guy Gardner was almost more of a comedic guy, too. Think I'll need to reserve judgment. I really don't know too much about Green Lantern beyond my childhood shows that had Jon Stewart, so it was a new tone to it.

Hawkgirl's screech was weird too, but liked her in general. Still, she felt weak compared to the other two

Yeah, his books are kinda dry. The world building isnt nearly as vast, kr detailed, as others. But I really fck with how 'realistic' they characters are in his stories. I know he is labeled grim dark but that just feels more realistic. One of my favorites of his was the wild west fantasy book he wrote. It was a refreshing unique blend in a genre that can get very stale.

Youre not the first I've heard have issues with his writing. A few of my friends find him flat out boring.

Im kinda embarrassed by this but I've never read Hobbs. I have some of her books but just haven't gotten around to reading them cause I push other books to the front. Ive never heard anything bad said about her books either. Maybe once I finish this book ill actually crack one open. Though I was really looking forward to reading either the locked tomb series or the bloodsworn saga. Too many damn books to read and dot is out here rereading thousand page books.

What made you choose Soldier Son series over the The Farseer Trilogy?

Both were incredible and it felt like they came right off the pages of a DC comic.

Also, Hawkgirl. Isabella Merced made a fan out of me.

Superman was a 5 outta 5 for me, so I hope Marvel nails this one. I love Pedro Pascal and Vanessa Kirby's made a fan out of me as well.

I actually finished the Farseer Trilogy a while back. So the amazing (and crazy thing) about Hobbs is that she has a bunch of trilogies under the Realm of the Elderlings name.

https://www.robinhobb.com/works.htm

So it starts with the Farseer Trilogy and then it ends with the Fitz and the Fool Trilogy, which concluded 20 years later in 2017. Really really good and you see the character age and grow. But yea, I'd start with the Farseer Trilogy. I only discovered recently that she wrote a different series called the Soldier Son series, so I'm diving in now, and it's great, too. She does a good job of bringing you into the character's minds.

I'll look up Locked Tomb and Bloodsworn Saga.
