Magic G.M. Otis Smith is still waiting for C Dwight Howard, who turned 22 last month, to gain weight. Smith knows Howard will not stay 268 pounds forever, but he isn't sure where the weight will end up. "All big men gain weight as they get older," says Smith, sitting on the Magic bench while watching rotund assistant Patrick Ewing work out players before a game. "Dwight just needs to be sure he doesn't gain it where Patrick has."

and Jermoe James...

Come on though All retired ballers gain weight; with the exception or Reggie Miller & Manut Bol
Look at
Barkley
Kenny Smith (not fat but he's gained)
Willis Reed

I mean when one is active and training nearly every day of his adult life then all of a sudden your not running up & down a basketball court 82 days of the year as well as no longer in a gym 300 days a year your bound to add weight.
I dont think he "Dissed" Patrick; I'd consider it more of a crude joke.

Can't remember a post game where Ewing wasn't absolutely drenched in his own perspiration. That'll keep you in shape with a svelt physique. No denying, he gave it his all, especially those early years.

Perhaps that accounts for Ewing's usual surly attitude at MSG fans, I guess he wanted to hurry and get a shower.

Patrick jokes about it himself. At least Patrick gained the weight after he retired unlike some Knick players of today.
