i think he and eric chenowith were both picked in the second round together... I don't think there was anything interesting about his knicks tenure, he got cut before the season, like plenty of 2nd rounders did before the nbdl, etc.

I never knew Jeff Trepagnier got drafted so low, WTH happened? Wasn't he like a stud coming out of UCLA? (He was my original comparison for OJ Mayo when I first seen OJ play).

that was an interesting draft night.

edit: nvm, looking at his college stats, seems it was more hype than anything else. he was one heckuva an athlete during those days though.

NBA Comparison: Shaquille O'Neal

Strengths: Has more strength and polish than Shaq at the same age. The only thing that can stop Eddy Curry from becoming the next dominant force in the NBA is Eddy Curry. Has off the charts strength. athleticism is very good for a player his size. Has learned to score despite constant double and triple teams. Has a nifty turn around, can even knock down the occaisional 18 footer. Unlike Shaq and Wilt, does not have the achilles freethrow curse.

Weaknesses: Weight has become a concern. Consistency. Has had his ups and downs over the course of his senior season. In a much hyped matchup with Tyson Chandler, Curry left the 30+ scouts who came to see the matchup scratching their heads. Must continue to "want it" and develop to ever become the player that Shaq is.
Nicknamed "Baby Shaq". Has a better combination of strength and agility than anyone in high school since Shaquille O'Neal. Very soft hands, excellent leaping ability. Still has a lot to learn but his game is further along then Shaq was at the same age. Has a great turn around hook shot. Overpowers everyone he goes up against. Could be the missing piece to stop a Laker championship run. Even has a decent 3 point shot which he displays on occasion. Doesn't appear likely that he'll play in college. Barring a complete shocker, will be Audi before ever stepping onto a college campus.

I think Wright played on the Arizona team with Arenas, Jefferson, and another good college player. As I remember he was a 6'7 power forward in the Malik Rose mold.

Oh and Jeff Trepagneir went to USC not UCLA. He was a great athlete but that's just about it.

Yeah, I always get confused with those two for some reason, Oddly enough I thought OJ Mayo and Kevin Love were on the same team at one point. :-?

Loren Woods I believe. In fact Knick fans were flabbergasted when the Knicks passed (twice) on Woods (who some thought would go in the late lottery) to take Chenowight AND Wright.

I remember Michael Wright, cause I watched some preseason games that year. I also remember his first pre-sea box score. Something like 6 minutes played, 5 rebounds.

and anyone who saw the box score said - hey, a rebounder. (this was when we had Camby & Kurt & LJ and nothing else in our front line and Spree at Small Forward) - so we were hungry for a true PF - even in the Mason Mold.

But what the box score watchers didn't realize was that wright got 4 of those rebounds on the same missed putback. - in about 5 seconds he collected 4 rebounds (3 of them off his missed shot), and no baskets scored. It was an ugly play that only looks good in the box score.

Wright had bulging bicepts, his body type was like Anthony Mason - I think perhaps a little bigger than mason, but less explosive. I never got the impression he was a "good character" guy, I think he was a player that Scott Layden or maybe it was Van Gundy thought would help. He was probably projected as a 2nd rounder with possible NBA skills, so he was worth a look.

Wright also made "quote of the day" onetime, when at the Knicks practice, he stopped running and started walking and Van Gundy yelled at him - Gundy Said "If you want to walk, you can walk back to NY" (this was the Charlston location the Knicks sometimes use to work out in pre-sea).

I think Wright was an early cut, and I remember (though I can never find the article) that he was caught using steroids while playing in the Euro League. I think of him as one of those guys who's biceps were bigger than his brain. Fringe NBA player at best. But physically he was a beast.

Wright played primarily garbage minutes during his brief stint with the Knicks. Kinda what you would expect from a 6'7" PF with little skills (but what a great singing voice). Ben Wallace and Dennis Rodman he was not. Was hard worker sure but was like having an eager 3rd grader up at the plate against Johan Santana.

Typical Layden choice.

he was that cat from arizona, left school early, good athlete, but had little skills. left handed guy I think. I remember when we let him go, he went to denver, and when we played them that same year, he and posey came in the game and waxed us as the nuggs blew us the hell out.. LOL.. another dumb layden pick..
