If we get within the top 5 in the draft this year, it will be the first time that the Knicks will have the 5 pick or higher since 1986, when they drafted Kenny Walker. Channing Frye being drafted at 8 was the highest a player had been drafted by the Knicks since Walker. Now obviously some of the years we havent had good picks is because we were competitive which is fine. But the fact that weve been below mediocre for so many years and only have a team of young role players and aging scrubs is beyond me.

We can always acquire over the hill top picks in the past 20 years. Chris Webber is still around.

Great post, very telling.

Puts the horrors of the Curry trade in perspective. To think we could have drafted guys like Aldridge, Roy, or Gay in 2006, and Noah or Sean Williams in 2007... Instead we get to watch Eddy stand there while rebounds bounce over his head...

For me, perhaps the most infuriating part of this whole debacle is that we STILL owe a first rounder (due to go UNPROTECTED to Utah in 2010 IIRC), for the privilege of contracting Cancer-bury.

Lets win more games and not make the playoffs again! Way to go.

We've been a lotto team 5 out of the last 6 seasons and only had 2 picks, both of whom were traded before there rookie contract was even up.

When was the last time we even kept a 1st round pick beyond 3 or 4 years? Charlie Ward? Hubert Davis?

This is why people say you cant rebuild in NY. Management has little patience and shown little interest in developing young players. Its always trade them away for someone who they think can help us make a run at the playoffs.

It absolutely isnt true that you cant rebuild in New York. Its just that this particular franchise is not willing to. Does anyone know when Dolan became president of the team?

Yeah, I agree. Its on management.

James Dolan took over with an official title in 1999 (after the Knicks final run). We've been in a downward spiral ever since. Grunfeld was fired in 1999, and Checketts was gone by 2001. We havent had a competent person in our front office since.

Sorry, we were too busy making the playoffs and fighting the Bulls/Pacers/Heat for most of the 20 years.

You're correct about the horrible trades Isiah has done but I will point out that the team made was a total wreck after the all star break. We got the #9 pick only because we made a strong push towards the end of the season with one play from Eddy Curry in particular that changed everything. We ended 33-49 and Portland 32-50.
If we lost that game, we may have been seeded #7 (I don't know if we would have won the tie-breaker with Portland) in the lottery and Portland #8. We would have inherited of Portland's ping pong balls and of course the winning one ! We would have won the lottery !
Of course we were all happy we didn't win the lottery since Isiah traded our pick in another of his long list of bonehead trades but if we kept the pick, we may have won the lottery or ended with a better pick.
I don't think Curry and the rest played hard during the last few games of the season because they desperately wanted to win. They don't have a winning mentality. I think Isiah pushed them and pressured them since he was scared the Knicks could surrender another top 5 pick to the Bulls.
If we still had our pick, we may have lost 4 or 5 more games and ended with a much better pick.

Jimmy Dolan replaced Dave Checkets at the Garden in june 2001.
After the Knicks were eliminated by the Raptors in the 1st round, there was the annual "end of the season meeting" where high ranking executives discuss the state of the team. Acknowledging the fiasco of the Ewing trade, Checkets said in that meeting the Knicks went as far as they could with the current cast and he needed to blow up the team and rebuild. Checkets resigned a few days later (he was forced out) and once again told Jimmy Dolan he should rebuild if he wanted to be competitive again, Jimmy Dolan took over and didn't listen to the advice, he promoted Scott Layden to President (of the team) and asked him "not ever to lose a player over money". As Allan Houston exercised his early termination option in his contract and became a free agent, Layden was scared to lose him (Detroit tried to lure him back) and offered him the max ($100M).
That's how Dolan's era started. Ever since he took over, the Knicks never got back to 0.500
It's Dolan's 7th season at the helm and he's on route to his 7th consecutive losing season (keep in mind we had 12 consecutive winning seasons before he ousted Checketts in 2001).

Wow, if our pick drafted Oden, all hell would break loose.
