Eating wise, grab a pizza slice just about anywhere for $2.00 if you're tight on cash, otherwise there's a bazillion restaurants to choose from. if you like live music head down to Bowery/ Lower east side or St Marks place. Also do most of your clothes shopping down there too. Don't ever go shopping anywhere near times square or 5th avenue or you'll get ripped off. Also if you head right down to the WTC area there's a huge dept store called Century 21 that sells alot of old designer label stuff for like 75% off. China town is another good area for shopping.
Sporting wise go check out a yankees game or mets.

If you want teal "touristy" stuff
The Statue of Liberty- you can go the the island that it's on, there's a museum at the base of it, and you can then climb to the head of the statue.
The Empire State Building- go there around an hour before sunset if you can, also go on a nice day so you can see better and also go to the outside observatory floor rahte than the inside one. It's about 15 floors higher.
Chinatown- especially if you like Chinese food
Little Italy (for Italian food)
Times Square (the theater district)
Madison Square Garden
Yankee Stadium
The United Nations
The Bronx Botanical gardens
The New York Aquarium (in Brooklyn)
Wall Street- see the stock exchange
Saint Patrick's Cathedral
say if you need more info on any of these or more places

You can also hit the South Street Seaport and catch the water taxi, tour Ellis Island, Statue of Libery and it'll take you to the BK Bridge.
