OT: Math question

Post#1 » by StarH2O » Sat Mar 21, 2009 7:10 pm

My bro needs some help with this question but I completely forgot how to do this.

Do we take the natural log? Thanks for any help. I'll back later.

Last year of grad school student here. I got a 3.8 GPA in undergrad. This is pre-calculus which i took literally ages ago but it shouldn't be too bad.

First i'd try to isolate e^x. you can treat it as a regular variable(a, b, c) until you get it by itself.. i'll start step by step.

multiply by sides by (e^x - 1) that gets you

e^x + 2 = 7e^x - 7

add 7 to both sides

e^x + 9 = 7e^x

subtract e^x from both sides.

6e^x = 9

divide both sides by 6

e^x = 3/2

take the natural log(ln) of both sides.

x = .405 in my calculator, to 3 significant figures..

If you have any other questions feel free to ask.

Interesting methodology.

I would go with:

(e^x-1+2)/(e^x-1) = (1)*(2/(e^x-1) = 7

e^x-1 = 2/7

9/7 = e^x
ln (9/7) = x

livintoolive.

you put a (-1) into the numerator thereby changing his equation, and thus altering the X value. I'm sure you meant to cancel it out someplace else but forgot. Its ok.
