Really good game for Paolo and Houstan. Paolo put on display his passing, shooting and a bit of ballhandling skills, looks like a guy that could become 1st option on offense. Needs to work on boxing out and awareness, seemed a bit more like a SF than PF out there. Houstan looks like a nice 3&D option for us. Inverse pick and rolls by Paolo might be fun going into the season, but requires shooters and cutters around him.

There was a JI sighting, so I guess he is part of this tight group. Also did you hear the announcer say that he has grown to 7ft and gained weight, filled out. If he can stay healthy, it’s gonna be a great year.

On another note, I can't help but shudder thinking this is what Jabari would look like in our team. While he could develop into All Star and a really good player somewhere else, without ability to create offense for himself he would really suffer in a team lacking playmaking.

It’s the same thing as Scottie Barnes last year. Great player, but he wouldn’t look nearly as good on our team. Not that Suggs does either yet, but that’s a separate topic.

We better spam Paolo/Franz pick and rolls/pops all season long.

I'm impressed with PB's responses. He clearly wants and expects to get better on defense and seems genuine about an all-around game. I really underrated his playmaking ability. It's just one summer league game, but this was a great start.

Def Swami wrote:I think Smith is going to be really good. He can shoot 3s and defend at a high level (his length on defense was on display tonight). But, his lack of a handle or post game really limits what he can do on offense. Both teams have bad guards that don't know how to run a proper offense. The difference between Banchero and Smith is Banchero can actually just call his own number to create something for himself or someone else. And that's essentially why he went #1.

When you have the first pick and your team is that bad, you ´re trying to draft the guy that has the potential to be your number one.
You want the guy that can score on the three levels and create for his teammates. And at the top of the draft, Banchero and Ivey were the two guys that had a small chance to be a legit primary ballhandler for a NBA team.
I think the Magic did the right thing by taking Banchero. He can be the point forward of this team. The combo with Franz Wagner could be freaking good. And I wouldn´t be surprised if Wagner´s excellent rookie season convinced Weltman to go with Banchero.
They ´re the same type of players. Not the most athletic or physical. Not the best shooters or defenders. But two unselfish big agile guys that can do a little bit of everything with strong basketball IQ and passing ability.
