Fultz had injury concerns before Orlando acquired him.
Just looking at JI's frame and skillset you knew it was a possibility.
Gary Harris was cooked before coming to Orlando.
Okeke was drafted with a major injury.
Bol Bol had an ankle injury in Oregon before being drafted and had surgery in Denver.
Outside of injuries the FO simply hasn't done a great job at drafting. Bamba, Okeke, and Cole have been pretty suspect.
I'm sorry, but what? They just fooled pretty much the entire league and took Paolo and we know look like geniuses for doing it. Last year we took Wagner at 8 and hit a home run. Suggs at 5 is TBA, but he's clearly improved. Then we get Cole at 15 who has shown to be a quality player. Yes, Maxey, Bane and maybe Bey have been better, but Cole has also had a better career thus far than others drafted in front of him. That was a decent pick. In 2018 Bamba was a miss. If Isaac hadn't come back early from the first injury, he probably wouldn't have gotten hurt again.
If you objectively grade our recent drafts, it's hard to argue against.
2022: A+. Maybe this could change in the next two-three years, but Paolo is clearly a player you can build an offense and team around.
2021: A-. Also, the Vooch trade has been one of the best in team history that even got us to that point.
2020. B+. Cole probably isn't a starter for a winning team, but he can provide a big boost off the bench. Only players who were taken after him who are noticeably better are Maxey and Bane. Maybe Bey.
2019. C+. I'm not a big Chuma fan, but he's going to be in this league for awhile. Missing on Keldon, Poole, KPJ, even Brandon Clarke and maybe Thybulle hurts, but Chuma could have definitely been a lottery pick had he not been hurt.
2018: D+. With Vooch still on the roster, this was a bad pick.
2017: C+, B- TBA: JI was looking like an All-Defensive type player before his injuries happened. We took him where he was projected and people saw a lot of potential. We'll see what happens with him.
I don't know how you can look at these results and not think our front office knows how to evaluate talent fairly well. No team hits on all their prospects, and as we have gone along and, this front office has done really well. Maybe they got lucky, but when your front office hands you major building blocks (Paolo and Franz) in back-to-back years and they weren't the obvious picks, you are doing something well.
So out of the 6 drafts that you yourself have rated they are averaging about a C+ to a B-. That's not even how I would rate them.
The JI draft remains to be seen. Currently I rate it a D to an F. Why? Because it doesn't matter how skilled a guy is if he's never playing. Will he even be the same when he returns? Who knows.
We agree on 2018. 2019 was botched as well. Chuma came in with an injury issue and he's basically been a role player/ bench guy during his tenure in Orlando. Sometimes he looks decent and other times he's non-existent. There are many players that can do what he does. 2020 we 100% disagree on. You went into some aspects as to why. Let's just say you are being VERY generous with a B+ on Cole.
Their best drafts were the last 2 years. It's not close. Suggs was a no-brainer. Franz is who they get credit for drafting. So that's 1/6 in terms of drafting someone off the radar that exceeds draft expectations between 2017 and 2021.
Paolo made sense for a team with zero offensive identity and injury issues. You don't get massive credit for spending the #1 pick, in a 3 player draft, to fill the massive holes to a roster YOU created.
No one is claiming that teams hit on all their prospects. However, nobody can argue that this front office is great at finding value elsewhere. Bol Bol is the first time I've seen them land this kind of prospect and Im guessing it was dumb luck. Why? Because an organization that punts every 2nd round pick obviously isn't looking for it. There is a reason why a team like Miami is in another stratosphere at landing talent compared to Orlando. The scouts have basically highlighted reclamation projects, busts, and injury prone guys every year leading up to 2021.
Houstan seems to be a serviceable player and we picked him in the 2nd round.
