I could see Detroit claiming him with Cunningham DPE if he's waived. But bought out he can choose his landing spot as a FA. Might be worth it for the player to give Orlando a little money back to be bought out vs waived right?

Man this AG trade retrospective is pretty disingenuous. We should go back to old threads and see how little most of the posters around here thought of AG's ability.

I feel like the AG trade has been as advertised since it happened. We knew AG had talent but could never really be the guy. He had a real shot of becoming super good in his role in the right place.. turns out playing off of Jokic is a great luxury. It's not like he didn't have big games here.

We knew the pick was a future one that probably wasn't going to be great as long as Jokic is there, and Hampton was a young guy who wasn't guaranteed to be anything special, we just hoped he would blossom more here.

The MLE next year is 11M. I would think Orlando needs to aim at that plus a mill or two (the Magic can out bid any MLE deal after all). A 3-year 40M contract should be fair. But he might want a chance to get his final "big" contract.

As to the trade itself, I think one has to conclude that Denver won and Orlando lost that trade.
Gordon is a good player and Harris has been consistently injured (perhaps as expected).
Hampton was a look-see throw-in. Now: time to move on. He does not display qualities of an NBA player (yet).
And the first will be in the 20s, almost certainly.

But a team can't win ever trade. And the other two were wins.

Overall, the Magic gained net value for trading away buddy-ball.

RJs biggest problem is he hasn’t accepted that himself. He wants to be a number 1 option and plays like it.

He will be in China if he doesn’t accept it.

I think it was a pretty good haul. A first rounder and a rookie first rounder that the FO was interested in.

I think it was pretty obvious to Magic fans and just about everybody...that AG would be a really good 4th best player on a good team, and he has completely bought into his role in Denver, and it's been a great fit....was never going to happen for him in Orlando because we didn't have the other pieces.

Danger of trading for draft picks from good teams is they might never be good. Milwaukee giving picks to New Orleans (JrueHoliday) isn't really be too valuable. The Lakers giving picks to NO in AD deal those could be something...better yet the Nets picks from the Harden deal look like they might turn out good.

He plays really hard on defense...wish some of our other guys would buy into how valuable that is...looking at you MF.

I think the issue with RJ is he still believes he is a PG, and the FO agreed that he had the most value at that position (or skillset).

In my opinion Hampton was our 2nd best guard defender (Suggs clearly best), he was just miscast as a lead ball handler. Should have been put at the 2 from his start in Orlando.

I am going to say I really enjoyed finished product Aaron Gordon. When we drafted him we were picking very very well for that position.

Early on in his career I remember in a family conversation saying that as he goes so goes our team. In hindsight that rang true. He is a great complimentary 2/3 option with a legit no 1 player.

Now if I am blunt, I am more then happy with Paolo year 1 then I am at Gordon doing very well for himself in Denver or any other time. Well wishes AG, we got a new shiny prospect to opine after.

I echo these words.

I had higher hopes for RJ Hampton and still think he could have a good career. My hope is he is waived or a buyout can happen so a 3rd player can be added via two-way conversion or free agency for the rest of the season. Maybe The Magic even find someone they want to lock in for summer league.

Aaron Gordon was going to be moved regardless and a future 1st, Harris and the prospect of Hampton was a good package.

Gordon has just flourished next to Nikola Jovic and a lot of us felt that could happen.

I still feel The Magic should have picked up his option but it just did not work out here.

We shouldn't be revisionist. When the three trades were made, many of us here thought this was the best trade of the three.

It didn't work out, but nothing ever is perfect.

And: we don't know what the 2025 will bring. The Nuggets core is young and the team should be great, but maybe there is a player-trade request, or some other ego meltdown that leads to a Nets type reshuffle.

Except the skill. possibly the will to succeed.

If he had all the tools we wouldn't be waiving him.
