Franz in 5 games (under 30 mpg) with Paolo 9 corner 3's. Franz in 20! games without Paolo 9 corner 3's. Of those 9 corner 3's 3 were selfcreated by Franz + 1 was a deflected block shot right into Franz arms in the corner.
Everyone except Franz & Paolo is just so horrible penetrating into the teeth of the defense & even when they did they cant finish or have tunnel vision. Suggs is able to do it a bit but only in full speed and without control. Black can pass but can only drive when he got a open lane & when he gets there and bodied up, you have the feeling he cant jump over a sheet of paper & Cole got tunnel vision.
I'm always amazed how lowly skilled on offense our whole guard platoon (PG & SG) is compared to the average at the position.

Our 3P% in away games is 29%

With Isaac on George we probably still win this but this team needs more than just Paolo coming back to become a good offensive.

Its promising that the Suggs/KCP/Franz/WCJ/Goga continues to perform well. +2 in the 1st quarter, +5 in the 3rd.

The bench though, that is hit or miss. It was a particularly young bench last night. Giving up the 14-2 run to start the 2nd was particularly painful. Lowry/PG/Oubre/KJ/Drummond and Lowry/Caleb/PG/Oubre/Drummond created that advantage. Philly has really solid depth.

Box score thoughts:

Orlando lost the FG% battle and lost the game.

Beyond the bricks, the Magic had a horrible TO night and lost the TO-differential battle (+4).

Orlando got killed on FTA differential (-12). Actually, the only reason this game was not a blow-out was that the Sixers is a horrible FT shooting team.

Unpopular opinion, it’s time to move on from JI. He’s not playing enough to be a regular factor right now and if he ever gets back to playing nightly it’s going to be to late. He’s would fit with a championship caliber team looking for bench depth now.

I can't keep up with the trade desires around here. Is it a PG or Sexton?

Agree.

It’s only useful if he is reliable and logging real minutes. I’d much rather move him for someone that plays basketball even if they aren’t as great defensively. Orlando lost last night because Isaac doesn’t play basketball when he’s mildly inconvenienced.

When Paolo returns he should see even less minutes IF Mosely isn’t a total idiot and doesn’t end up moving Goga back to the bench.

When Paolo + Franz cost the cap two max contracts + Suggs making his deal, then they should be finding a real starting point guard to pair next to those guys. Infinitely more important than an injury prone backup PF that barely plays. And no, AB is not a starting point guard in this league. I’m slowly coming around to that being the case.

It's easy to say 'Just shoot more 2s and get to the basket more" but opposing teams aren't stupid, they know we are a bad 3 point shooting team so they pack the paint and focus on stopping drives and cuts to the basket. And with the lack of shot creators and good playmakers on this team this is pretty easy to do for most defences in the league if we don't force them to change their coverage by making at a good clip the open 3s they are daring us to shoot.

Also, all the hustling on D we do has its physical price. Especially for Franz who has to carry such a heavy load on both sides of the ball.

This is not to say that we don't take some ill advised 3, but I don't think Mose telling the team to shoot less 3s will make much difference if any, especially while Paolo is out.

I question the added 50 pounds on his body and whoever mad that a priority for him over the summer. That’s some serious extra weight on someone that has had an injury history like JI. I’m no MD, maybe it was to help him but it’s come at the cost of his stamina it seems and ability to move like he was last season.

Return to Orlando Magic
