Yeah, this injury is kinda serious. He seems like he had a cartilage defect. Back in day a cartilage defect was a death sentence for many players as they would often attempt to correct the injury with microfracture surgery which did not have the best results and ended many player's careers prematurely like T-Mac and Amare. Due to the failure of microfracture, new procedures are being used such as Macis and OATS. As these treatments are new, they are experimental in the sense that many NBA players have not had them. I have never heard of mosaicplasty, but I had the Maci's procedure done on both my knees, and I have to wait a year before I am allowed to run. So, 6 months seems kinda quick compared to my situation. Lonzo had a similar injury (in addition to a mencius transplant) and that took him 9 months before he could start doing activities.
Given the history of the guys who have suffered cartilage defects I am shocked people are not asking if Suggs comes back the same player.
We don’t want Suggs to come back the same reckless player. Because he has great defensive instincts, he’ll just have to figure out how to impact the game after this surgery without being able to go full 100% Jalen Suggs. I know he was playing through injury but this man’s pain tolerance has to be through the roof.
When I ask if he will come back the same player, I am not asking in the sense of style of play. I am asking if he will be a shell of himself. The issues maybe the micro fracture procedure and not the injury it self but players who have had cartilage defects and have had it repaired historically are levels below what they used to be. Like with T-Mac and Amare they pretty much lost their leaping ability after the surgery. I am hoping that the procedure that Suggs had doesn’t have the same outcome with micro fracture surgery.
