On the other, we still haven’t had an offense not be bottom 10 since he’s been here. He did take forever to pull the plug on Vuc and Fournier treadmill. He has a few hits in the draft and a few misses. At least he got the highest picks right.

I wouldn’t extend him but this organization loves continuity like it is oxygen so I’d expect it to happen.

I think that’s why you got to wait and see how it plays out this year.

Yeah I get that. I just don’t think it should go unnoticed that it took a decade to get to this point in Weltman’s contract year.

Completely agree. He’s been given a long leash. And the front office has been super conservative almost to a detriment. It’s my biggest qualm with them since they came in. I think they’re probably an average front office. Not the best at asset management IMO. He finally got aggressive this summer so let’s see how it actually plays out.

I think a lot of fans don't want to reckon with the reality of timelines. The real failure was a failed rebuild with Hennigan they never got seen through fully, and was a failure anyway in compiling top-end talent. Weltman should've made moves a bit sooner, but like I've written before, the appetite for another tank right after a 5-6 year rebuild was never going to happen. They had to attempt to try to win even with **** 8th seed ceiling teams.

Houston is going in now because their guys are ready. OKC going in because they have an MVP 26 year old. Other young teams may not even get off the ground. This is the perfect time to make moves.

He definitely could've hit better with some draft picks, not punt 2nd rounders, and add a better shooter/point guard over the last year or so, but beyond that, we had to be patient.

53% would extend him now, 47% would wait or maybe even fire him.

Quite the turnaround for our boy, eh?

Why does this matter?

3 draft picks over 6 drafts between 2017-2022 have defined the entire rebuild.
Ownership's bar is on the floor and Orlando hasn't actually been league relevant since 2011. Now the expectation is a legitimate playoff team.

He's going to be extended by ownership. He created a legitimate playoff team using 3 draft picks.
It just took him 9 years and 2 total trades.

It matters because context matters. He didn’t walk into cap space and a treasure chest of picks. He had to build the foundation from a treadmill roster with no direction. Turning Vooch into Franz and WCJ, hitting on Paolo and Suggs, and staying disciplined through multiple cycles is what makes this a legitimate rebuild.

If it were as easy as just hitting three picks, more teams would do it.

No, why does the poll matter?
He will get extended. Orlando, barring health, will be competing for the foreseeable future whether it is truly a contending roster or not.

And yeah, you just retyped what I just said in a different format. That's why its called a rebuild. He made Orlando a deep playoff team in nearly a decade long window. Very cool.

Because the poll reflects perception, and perception is what changed. Two years ago this fanbase was ready to run him out. Now over half would lock him in early, before a playoff series win. That shift speaks to the process earning trust, not just the outcome arriving. And if we’re both saying the same thing, maybe it’s worth thinking about why the tone feels so different.

No.

The only reason this entire rebuild matters is 2 drafts and 3 total draft picks landing out of 9 years of rebuilding.

Giving up draft picks for a player he passed up on in 2020 to select Cole Anthony, isn't the smartest move but a desperate one! :banghead:

We should have been able to select a gem in Joan Beringer at 16, better yet kept Matt Lloyd:

I know it's early but he gives me Giannis vibes and has MVP potential, I've been on the train for a while!

Matt Lloyd is guy who drafted:
Payton
Hezonja
Bamba
Isaac
Okeke

Whoever he tells you to draft, you skip that guy

To be fair Bamba was an interesting prospect but never had the motor while also being stuck behind Vucevic, Isaac was intriguing but had injuries and Hezonja had attitude issues!

Those three players are all lottery picks in today's NBA based off ability but certain situations held them back!

NBA teams have to do better job of making sure players check all boxes, but an opportunity to get Beringer but I guess Orlando didn't do their homework because at #16, that's when you can take calculated risks while making sure the player you want checks the boxes.

Orlando needs a athletic center with a motor and defensive upside, no let's stay pat and go with injury plague soft WCJ and no rhythm Goga!

They take Jett Howard in the lottery and don't play him, wasted asset. Even if he's not good, trade for a future pick or something! :banghead:

I sure hope we don't extend Weltman because he focuses so much on stats and analytics crap especially if he never played the game.
