Osen: Smith backs Van Gundy

When Magic General Manager Otis Smith hired Stan Van Gundy to coach the Magic, he liked the fact Van Gundy demanded accountability from his players -- be they the best player or the 15th man.

So Smith said he had no problems with Van Gundy publicly calling out all-star center Dwight Howard after Monday night's game against the Cleveland Cavaliers. Van Gundy said Howard was paying too much attention to offense and not enough to defense and rebounding.

"They're two grown men who have a difference of opinion," Smith said. "I don't think the stats lie. When Dwight's dominating defensively, we're a better team. He probably could have called out three or four other guys."

stan did no wrong, he did it professionaly and had stats to back up his claim..i think he handels this team very well, dwight and others responded..we got a pretty good coach for this team right now

you see what happens when you call someone of dwights personality out...he takes it to heart and makes sure the next game he gives 150%...denver had it coming

I hope SVG called Howard out after the Denver game. He'll get 40 rebounds next time out, not to mention dominate all-star weekend.

Look, previous Magic coaches have started the year well, and the ended up in a nose dive. Mediocrity in the past could win a coach-of-the-year award for an Orlando coach.

This year, the Magic take a 7 game lead into to ASW. The Magic are the third best team in the East, and in the top third of all teams in the NBA. Heck, the Magic still have the most road wins in the league!

StM has taken a team that GM Smith created and ensures that there are no major slumps. Stan wins on the road. Stan wins with defense.

StM is doing his job. Full stop (period).

Last year after our hot start, we entered the ASW break 1 game over .500 (27-26); this year we're 12 games over (33-21).

Stan's a great coach. I would have stopped at the benching rather than the media stuff. Dwight has his head together thats all it needed but I back you guys right to back or not back off whoever you choose to front.
