Sports Guy: Magic should trade for Mike Miller

Post#1 » by GrahamTheft » Thu Feb 21, 2008 5:48 pm

This article came out yesterday on Page 2... don't know if anyone already posted it.
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/bl ... e=20080220

TRADE 1B: Orlando trades Pat Garrity, Carlos Arroyo, Maurice Evans, J.J. Redick, a 2008 No. 1 and $2 million to Memphis for Mike Miller, Casey Jacobsen and Brian Cardinal.

Why Memphis does it: Straight salary dump. Every guy the Grizzlies are getting back is an expiring deal except for Redick (2009). It's a soul-less, depressing trade that would ruin their fans' collective will to live. In other words, it's just like the Gasol trade.

Why Orlando does it: Are the Magic going to take a shot here or not? They're the fourth-best team in the East, they have three really good players, and they have $17 million worth of expiring contracts. What are they waiting for? They need one more quality swingman that can play the 2 and 3 and Miller is the best one available.

(Actually, why am I making up trades to make Orlando better when they could absolutely topple the Celtics in a series? Um, scratch this idea! Otis Smith, if you're reading this, apparently Mike Miller hated Orlando when he played there and thinks everyone there is trailer trash. You definitely don't want to do this one, Otis.)

I love Sports Guy, but I don't know how he could be this dumb. Why do we need "one more quality swingman that can play the 2 and 3? What about Dooling? Bogans?--although he can't play the 3 really... and what's wrong with putting Hedo at 2 and Shard at 3 or vice versa?...

I feel like it's obvious to everyone on this board that we need a good point guard (of which the market is lacking at the moment) and/or another big man (which we will hopefully be able to land in the form of Wilcox or Haslem or somebody else before 3pm today)... So now we need a "swingman" too? I think I might email SG letting him know how poorly he knows the Magic.

Miller does absolutely nothing for me - we get a guy with some offensive skill who doesn't know how to play defense. Why can't we get a guy who can play some defense - we have a lot of offensive weapons. Miller is so soft he could do Charmin commercials - I don't like it - we need a PF, yes we need a SG, but that is secondary to our gaping hole - Dwight can't do it all by himself - he needs a big body in there to bang with other teams - give us some attitude and some defensive help and he doesn't have to be a stellar offensive threat we have a lot of offense, but he needs to be good on defense - I don't like Mike Miller at all and he wears a f'in beret in his hair - however you spell it - we don't need it.

Garrity = 4 Mill +
Arroyo = 4 Mill
Dooling = 3.6 Mill
Bogans = 2.7 Mill (Play Option Not been reported)
Mo Evans = 1.5 Mill
Foyle = 1.2 Mill ( Team Option)
Augustine = .7 Mill
Gortat = .4 Mill ( Team Option)

A little over 17 Mill in Expirings

The team and player options shoudnt really count. Dooling i believe also has a player option.

Yes we need an upgrade at PF the most, but looking long term, Miller would be a huge upgrade at the 2. He has great size and good handles, could feed Dwight in the post easier than anyone in the NBA since he is a 6-8 SG with a a sick shot. Battie will be hear next year to rebound at both C and PF along with our 1st rounder.

Why Not?

Dooling is in the Last Year of his Deal.

Agreed. Whenever you can stockpile talent while giving up much less you are doing good. We can always trade Hedo/Miller in the offseason to get a PF/PG, which would get more than Garrity, Arroyo, Bogans.....

I don't want to trade Mo Evans... he is a character guy and exciting to watch. unless he is included in a trade that brings back a total stud, which Mike Miller is not, I think Mo should stick around as a solid starting 2 guard. I'd like to see him get re signed this summer too...

Return to Orlando Magic
