OT: should games end on foul calls?

Post#1 » by happypedro12 » Tue Mar 25, 2008 1:44 am

Ok, now this is a little bias since i was hoping FSU all the way, but they just lost to Okl. state by 1 point. the girl was "fouled" with :01 left and they won. Now i'm not taking anything away from the winning team, but do you think its right for games to end on a foul call? i mean unless its some flagrant, I don't like having a tied game end because there might have been contact.
Whether you think you CAN or you think you CAN'T, you're right.

A foul is a foul. I agree there should be a bit more discretion about the severity of the foul at the end of the game, because players should decide games not officials. That being said, I think there are way too many foul calls in the NBA anyway. They let a lot more go in college which keeps the game flowing and in turn keeps the fans attention. I'm sick of seeing players run into lane and just throw themselves into the defender and get foul calls. It's garbage!!!

yea, seriously. Who watches girls basketball? every time I watch girls basketball I tell myself "a man could've done that better." Every time a girl makes a layup, "a man would've dunked it!" every time they make a shot, "a man would've made that shot better!" (ah, good old Stephen Colbert humor, i think that's who it is anyway, lol)

But on subject, do I think they SHOULD end on foul shots? Typical no. But do I think it's ok if they do? YES. I'm all for allowing tough defense at the end of games. Allow some bumping, allow some contact. But too often at the end of games people are allowed to be mugged. Their arms are raked as they drive the lane. They're pushed while in mid-air, etc. Sometimes I think it's necessary for the refs to blow the whistle and have the game end on free throws.

Now a tie-game might be a little different. I might allow more contact to go just because it could be resolved in OT. But I still would call it if it was a blatant foul. If it's speculation, let it go. Refs sometimes go by what they THINK happened, instead of what they saw happen (case in point when a ref calls a foul when their POV is blocked).

I have no problem with the game ending on a FT, though it needs to be a blatant foul, and more than likely an intentional foul. If the person was playing good D but got a little skin, I might let it go. But if they purposely grabbed the person to keep them from making the shot, I'd blow the whistle.

I just watched the last minute of Geo Washington vs Cal.. game was tied.. girl on the Cal team wanted to call timeout but she TRAVELED before it so Geo got the ball back.. one of them shot a jumper, missed, girl on her team got the reb and put it back up as the buzzer sounded and they won. Pwnt.

The score was tied. There was no question it was a foul, although it wasn't a mugging. The question was whether it happened before the end of the first OT. The clock wasn't visible on the TV view at the time of the foul. The refs conferred for quite a while, looked at replays, and decided the clock was at 0.7. The player missed the first free throw, but hit the second, winning the game.

It was correct, but it wasn't very satisfying. The game, incidentally, was a good one. The largest lead held by either team in the whole game was 5 points.

FSU got severely f*cked over on that call, even the opposing coach knew it when he went over to shake her hand afterwards.

there should be more discretion but if there were no fouls on the last play, the defending team would just hack away so yes fouls should still be called

All 2,880 seconds of a ball game should be called the same. There are no rules that the last second is more special than all other seconds.
