Nope, the remaining salary would come off the books 1 year after he was forced to retire, the player would still get paid though, I'd imagine insurance would cover most of the cost.

Theres no exception, injury exceptions are only for season ending injuries like Battie, and even those are only for 50% of the players salary.

Chopping Meer off the books due to retirement would just leave us over the cap and with one less player.

well i guess that is what i was thinking and just had it confused...hmm...well...get well soon jameer :)

Yeah lovehoops, it can be associated with nausea too. He may very well have another concussion. I don't mean to diagnose over the internet, but when I think of concussions there are more serious symptoms that I think of first other than dizziness and nausea. Concussions are usually accompanied with severe headaches and disorientation or even blackouts well after the incident, and of course dizziness and nausea too, but its usually the first two symptoms that people complain about more. And of course the more concussions that you suffer from, the easier it is to get another one. I'm still skeptical that that is what is going on with him though.

As far as the mouthpiece goes. It can help soften the blow to the head, but only if he got hit in the jaw obviously. It does nothing however if you get hit on the side of the head. The mouthpiece is usually just to protect the teeth for the most part. Not sure what is so special about it, but I'm sure it was fitted from taking a mold of his teeth vs the old school type where you had to dip it in hot water yourself. Maybe its lighter or a lower profile or something, I don't know.

as a fighter i know this from experience, but using a mouthguard reduces the incidence or severity of concussions as forces delivered to the jawbones are transmitted to the skull, primarily the bones surrounding ones brain. studies have also concluded that you are 4 times less likely to sustain knockout while getting struck with you mouth clinched tight, hints the use of a mouthguard.

Thats definitely true thief, but in that sport they are intentionally trying to hit you in the jaw. In basketball its more of a freak thing. It does soften the blow to your brain though, your right.

well any direct or indirect blow to the side of the head while the jaw is disengaged can onset a knockout or concussion...i believe 12lbs of pressure is all that is required for a knock out...but dont quote me there...it's been a long time since i have heard that little tidbit...

so an elbow to the box (direct butt of chin) or the side of the mouth is all she wrote...

IIRC 12 cubic pounds of force/pressure will break bones as well.

From today's Orlando Sentinel, on Jameer:

He had a CT scan Monday, which revealed some conflicting reports.

"My brain was a little loose," Nelson said with a laugh.

"They said his brain was normal. I said I might have to dispute that," Magic Coach Stan Van Gundy said.

Kidding aside, Nelson was back at practice Thursday, in the thick of a physical workout, and left feeling 100 percent again. He was held out of Tuesday's game against the New Orleans Hornets because he still felt a little dizzy after a Monday workout, which prompted the CT scan.

"I know I'm going to get hit at the position I play," Nelson said. "But I'll block it out. I can't be out there thinking I might get hit again. If I was going to change the way I played, I wouldn't allow coach to play me."

So it's looking to be very likely that he'll play tomorrow?
