I have been monitoring the Memphis situation as Mike Conley Jr. will be an unrestricted free agent this summer. He just turned 28 in October, so he should have at least 2-3 solid starter level years over his next contract. This would coincide nicely with Payton as he matures over that time and then takes over as Conley fades into a back up PG role. Conley is also a very good defender and known for his leadership skills and high BB IQ.

But why would he leave Memphis?

Their key players: M Gasol (turns 32 in Jan), C Lee (30 and UFA this summer), J Green (29 and UFA this summer), M Barnes (35), T Allen (34), Zbo (35), M Chalmers (29 and UFA this summer).

The age and uncertainty of that roster competing for anything over the next 4 years creates a very good opportunity for a team able to offer him a max deal and a winning future.

if Memphis looks like they are going to rebuild and there is a very good sense that he would resign w Magic after a trade...this would allow the Magic to add another high salary player (Terrence Jones ) and keep Conley and Fournier:

Oladipo + Watson + Napier for Conley Jr.
