Let's not give up on CJ too soon. Even if he's lost a step at 31, he ought to be around his 38% career 3PT%. That's a good weapon to have off-ball alongside Payton.

Oh, I'm not giving up on CJ at all. It's just CJ hasn't shot well during all of preseason and game 1 and I'd just prefer he gets his shot back before playing him next to Payton and his shaky (yet very improved!) jump shot.

It's the end of November, and here is the current depth chart:

Payton / Napier (Watson injured)
Fournier / Oladipo (they also play together at times)
Harris / Gordon
Frye / Nicholson
Vucevic / Smith

I'm pretty sure Aaron is still backing up Tobias, right? Or is he playing a little of both forward spots?

We know Hezonja has been squeezed out of the rotation with this lineup change. It's interesting that Dedmon can't get any playing time. I guess as long as we're playing good defense, we might as well utilize Jason Smith's additional offense. And at least that's one guy not having a career year when he's up for a new contract. :)

That is generally correct except technically Dipo has played at least a few minutes in each of the last few games as the pg and (as you note) AG has played a decent amount at the 4.

2015-2016 Lineups

Post#86 » by tooler » Thu Dec 3, 2015 10:28 pm

Small sample sizes, but this is still pretty interesting:

Our original starting lineup with 3 guards played 111 minutes and they were -16 net points per 100 possessions.

Our new starting lineup has played 89 minutes together and they are +16 net points per 100.

Our first subs are usually Nicholson and then Oladipo. That lineup (with Elf/Tobias/Vooch) has played 33 minutes and is +15 net points per 100.

A lot of this comes from our 4 game winning streak so of course the numbers look good. But it still explains a lot. We're hitting teams with strong lineups the first 8 or so minutes of the 1st and 3rd quarters.

One weird thing: Oladipo and Frye have only played 36 minutes together. Frye is Oladipo's 12th most frequent 2-man combo this season, above only Marble. Last season, Frye was Oladipo's 4th most frequent 2-man combo in terms of minutes together. I haven't run the numbers and the samples are so small anyway, but I do wonder if that explains some of Oladipo's early struggles this year. Probably not much if anything.

Since Frye has started and Nicholson has entered the rotation, AG has been used almost exclusively as a SF, which I like. Now to find a way to give him more minutes.

Posting for posterity and because I don't think people are really grasping how good we've been since the lineup change:

From November 26th on, the Magic have the highest offensive rating, net rating, and TS% in the conference. Their defense has slipped, but it's still top 5 in the conference.
