Re: Dedmon or Mahinmi
Dedmon on a 5 year, $20M deal please. By the time Vogel is done with him he'll be a monster.

There is no way we are keeping him and Vuc. The same applies for Mahinmi. If either one of those players end up on the Magic Vuc needs to pack his bags because he is out. If we tried to keep them all the there would be a glut at 5 which will eat into Gordon or Hazonja's time.
And why is that? Vuc > Mahinmi Vuc > Bogut Vuc> Horford
No thanks, I'll keep Vuc paired with Ibaka and AG00.

Chepest isn't always the best way to go and we may resign Dedmon even if we sign Mahinmi. I could still even see us resigning Smith too as we don't have much depth at the four and five spots.
I said cheapest because we should take the one, who won't affect us going after 2 max next summer.
Yeah two max guys like the ones we got now? Oh no wait we didn't and aren't likely to with the remaining time left. Why? Well probably because we are not a team that is viewed as a winner and thus gets passed over by a lot of guys. We get better by going after the best not just going after the cheapest. And if we can get Mahinmi on a 1 year deal then bananas we both win.

My thinking is that if we sign Mahinmi, we'd be rescinding the QO from Dedmon. Is it worth it? It's my belief that Dedmon could be had for less than Mahinmi and is just as capable a player as Mahinmi.
So my question is, who would this board rather have, Dedmon or Mahinmi?
Definitely Mahinmi. I think he is clearly the better player. He is more of a proven defender and a better scorer and has done it with fairly good teams. Also signing Mahinmi doesn't preclude us from resigning Dedmon as right now we only have Vuc at center and PF isn't that deep either. Gordon and Green can play the 4 and Ibaka can play the 5 but still more depth wouldn't be a bad thing. I think signing Mahinmi has more of an impact on Smith not returning then Dedmon but even then Smith could be resigned for depth at PF.
Obviously Mahinmi is better but you have to look at the big picture.
And what big picture am I missing then?

I'm on the Mahinmi boat, but you could argue that giving him too big of a contract may hurt us next summer and Dedmon is the cheaper option with the potential to get get better under a coach that has done well with players like him.

i dont think he cares about starting, but this is his last chance at a big contract so money more than starting will matter for him

As long as the contract is reasonable it should be fine... we can still move him or another contract if needed next summer. For me I want to make sure we put out a team that can make the playoffs... because if we don't make it then we probably lose ibaka and that would be a disaster. Mahinmi off the bench would be huge for us... can you confidently say the same about dedmon?
