Shawn Marion is arguably a Halof Famer. He is a 15 ppg guy over 1000+ games.
Kawhi Leonard is the best defensive SF of his generation, buy a considerable margin.

What the players have in common is that both are 6'7".

Aaron Gordon is taller than both, but still undersized for a prototype NBA PF. In today's small ball, Gordon could emerge as a competent PF. But right now he is, for me, I would project him as a SF who will develop in to a PF as his athleticism declines.

What is my point? Gordon is nowhere near Marion or Leonard, both of who are elite.

He's really most effective close to the basket right now, so I oftentimes wonder how he'd be if he could shoot reliably mid-range and/or from 3 point range. It's probably asking too much, but it'd be amazing if he could get to the line more and increase his FT %. The Magic are in desperate need of someone to get to the free throw line and create some offense.

I did an shooting analysis a few weeks ago on some of young prospects and I made a similar observation. Here is AG's profile.

Shooting Analysis- Aaron Gordon

2015-16 (includes % improvements from last year)

2P- 53.1% (+3.1%)

0-3ft- 65.4% (+1.9%)

3-10ft- 34.4% (-7.5%)

10-16ft- 34.0% (+24%)

16-3Pft- 33.8% (+3%)

3P- 29.6% (+2.5%)

FT- 66.8% (-5.3%)

Summary

AG has displayed tremendous improvements in his game this year. He has shown tremendous growth in his midrange shooting ability. He saw a dip in his shooting from 3-10 ft. partly due to a decrease in attempt rate. He shot 5-11 (45.5%) on hook shots this year as opposed 95-303 on midrange shots (31.4%). He should look to improve his midrange jumper to a more respectable rate. In addition, he could take a few more hook shots to help him settle into the offense quicker.

Aaron's next step as a shooter is to go from below average to above average on all of his jumpshots. He shown a great deal of growth in the span of two years, and its hard to imagine that the 20 year old Gordon is done yet. If he starts hitting near 40% on his midrange shots and 35%+ on his 3P shots, he will be a very tough cover.

2017 Primary Goals

1. 37%+ shooting on shots from 3ft. to the 3 point line.
2. Free-throw shooting needs to be 70%+ next year.
3. 3PT% should be north of 33%.

So what's the goal with AG? He came into the league as a PF and the word these days is that he's supposedly going to start at SF next season. Does he have the perimeter game to handle it? How good is he at handling the ball and creating for himself and others? Was the plan to always develop him into a SF or did that change with the addition of Ibaka? Has he played the 3 with any kind of regularity?
