The Jonathon Simmons contract

Post#1 » by npiper17 » Sat Oct 28, 2017 9:36 am

I know it’s early in the season but I just want to take a minute to applaud what appears likely to be the value move of free agency by Weltham.

3 years / $18m with a team option for the third year is pretty outstanding work. I can’t imagine what good old Rob would have led with in negotiations.

Simmons honestly deserves a raise. If the team stays as constructed he's a perennial 6MOTY contender.

Outstanding singing by Weltham, even if it ended up higher.

Makes you wonder why the Spurs didn't retain him

It definitely seems like he wanted a larger role, which may not have fit with the spurs.

First summer on the job, and they make a signing better than all of Hennigan’s combined.

Bravo.

That's the difference between a GM that didn't know what he was doing and Weltman/Hammond.

Bingo

Hennigan is a great scout. He has an eye for talent. Gordon was a tremendous pick. Look at what Vuc is doing now. Oladipo is turning into a great player and so is Harris. He knew how to choose good players. What he didn't know was how to build a team with the right fits. Essentially what hennigan needs is a real gm to tell him the type of player to find and to go scout for him.

He also didn't do the little things that change the culture of an organization like get Tmac.

If he keeps improving the next 3 years, he’ll get a nice hefty contract at age 30. He came here to get an opportunity and most likely passed on bigger contracts to do so. There’s no way no one offered more than 6mil/year for him.

Just thinking about it.

Its possible the Jeff’s contract was bloated because its a one year deal. If he signed cheap with a lottery team then suffers a major injury he has no future anymore.

Still a good signing by weltman for simmons

If you want entertainment on a rainy day, go find the negative nancies in the original Simmons signing thread.

Most people were astute enough to applaud this signing but some still questioned the Juice.

Do not question the Juice, he has changed the culture of this team.

We can't really know that.

Hennigan's method was to identify targets and then bum-rush what he believed were realistic options with exorbitant offers. He wanted players to sign quickly. This is the plan of a man that is operating from a position of weakness and fearful of being left without a chair when the music stops. He was never really astute in free agency, but he was in desperation mode when he signed Green, Biyombo, and Augustin.

Our current management simply waited for the cap space around the league to dry up to evaluate what was left in a more economically friendly environment. It just so happened that Simmons came available in this environment because San Antonio renounced him after they signed Rudy Gay. He wasn't available when free agency opened. When he did become available, there weren't many potential suitors for his services. Patience is a virtue.

Welcome back to having a competent front office that doesn't hand out 100mil to Biz and DJ.

I wholeheartedly agree with you in that he changed our culture. The man is constantly talking, leading the team, and basically making sure everyone is going 110% all the time. It's still early, but if this continues I can't remember the last time we signed a player who impacted our team this much.

I would love to have a guy like this on the thunder. What a steal.

Simmons signing here was huge for the franchise, and I think he may be the leader this team has been looking for. I also think he eventually makes Fournier expendable. Fournier refuse to even play pedestrian defense is one of the primary reasons the Hornets beat us tonight. Simmons plays to win, Fournier plays for stats
