They right now, for careers have same defensive rating, similar offensive rating and pretty much copy past same defensive box plus minus. They are both 6'9 uber athletic guys who think/thought they are great shooters. They are both below average passers, ok rebounders and complete no threats when it comes to shotblockin
If you remove your hindsight glasses, you'll remember that Rudy Gay before 2010s was viewed as future big thing and his stats were similar to Wiggins or Jabari Parker ( or Gordon's 2017-18 so far ) .
I remember games where he was going against Lebron and actually outplayed him. His talent and potential was through a roof but his low basketball IQ , poor defense and lack of floor awarness killed his superstar potential.
I really hope that Gordon focuses more on being good all around player, instad of being guy who bit+**s about drawn plays for him and who takes 8th three in a game after missing 6 of 7 in same game.
Interesting take, but I'm not sure if I agree completely. AG might be delusional a little bit about his shooting, bus Gay was in complete denial about not being efficient. Did you forget that he even banned the stat sheets in the locker room when he was playing in Toronto? He knew he was taking bad shots, and instead of fixing it, he tried to make sure his teammates wouldn't find out
Him being brick machine is true but through his first 4 years he wasn't that bad. I actually think that he could become allstar if he had right coaching from start. His raw talent was through a roof.
He was around 44-45% FG, 34-35% for 3 on 17 ppg and 5rpg. His true shooting percentage through first 4 years was around 52,7% . That's not great by any mean, but it's not that bad.
Through Gordon's first 4 years he sits on 10 ppg, 5,5 rpg ,46,5% FG ,30,9% for 3 and 54% TS.
So only thing Gordon does better is that 1,3% TS , and that's only because career number is inflated by unrealistic 63% TS that he has right now that goes down on game to game bases ( it was 68 just 4 games ago ).
Digging deeper into some other advanced stats there is really hard to find some huge difference in their production in first 4 years.
In first 3 years Memphis flat out sucked with clear lack or leadership, just like Magic. In 4th year they won 40 games and Gay was with Z Bo second best player but Conley and Gasol just started to look like good starters. In year later they won 46 games , that's same year where Memphis upset Spurs and lost to OKC in 7 games, but Gay got hurt before playoffs ( shoulder surgery ). If he played that playoffs and Memphis did beat Spurs, he would probably never recive that " bad player " label that he has now.
