Magic shoot a free throw approximately every 8 real-world minutes

Post#1 » by drsd » Wed Dec 19, 2018 8:27 am

The Orlando Magic have taken the fewest free throw attempts in the league. Here’s why....

Fascinating read loaded with real stats on the issue.

OPP: How likely are the Magic to shoot a free throw? link

It is actually staggering to realise how awful the Magic is in this key stat.

Here's a new stat to contemplate: James Harden is closer to the Magic's FT rate than the Magic is to the Clippers :o
(10.2 ftapg vs. 17.4 vs 29.2)

In comment section:

Free Throw Rate stats for key players:

DJ Augustin – 29.4%
Evan Fournier – 15.%
Jonathan Isaac – 31.8% !!
Aaron Gordon – 19.4%
Nikola Vucevic – 17.6%
Terrence Ross – 13.4%
Jonathan Simmons – 27.7%
Jerian Grant – 15.3%
Mohamed Bamba – 15.0%

Those three in particular need to start getting to the line if we ever want to be a good FT shooting team. We cannot sustain an offense without that, since we are not a great shooting team either. Ross is just out there to shoot, but it would be nice for him to drive a few more times and attempt to get to the line as well.

I really don't think you should be excusing Bamba from this. Yeah, he wants to be a unicorn, but right now he's just a low effort defensive player that stands on the perimeter offensively and chucks 3's at a poor %. I honestly have a hard time watching him - I feel like he just gets by on defense because of his long arms, not because he's actually putting in effort.
