DJ is backup fodder playing starter because he's lucky to be in ORL (1 of 2 teams in the entire league that still need a PG). He's not someone you say, "I'm only giving up Augustine for a star level pg prospect". That's ridiculous. You'll get nowhere near that.

MCW and Briscoe won't even be on the team next year.

Augustin is an elite shooter for the PG position and can hit some clutch shots/draw fouls at a decent rate.

Everything else is lacking. Noticeably, his defense and ability to get the team involved and see the floor. He's too small to constantly drive and dish or finish with power, luckily he has some nifty moves. Good stopgap PG, but as a straight up point guard, is lacking a lot of needed skills to take this team to the next level.

I think DJ will continue starting to start the season and Fultz will be brought along slowly off the bench. If Fultz starts looking like the former #1 pick he can take the job from DJ pretty easily... otherwise backup is fine. Briscoe or MCW as third string emergency backup in case Fultz has shoulder issues. This is assuming we actually keep the team together. If we let our vets go and tank by default then it doesn't really matter.

I hope Fultz can take the starter job by the end of preseason.

Bro I don't care if fultz had his arm/shoulder cut off.... If the former number 1 overall pick can't beat DJ Augustin when he's healthy then we got a big problem.

100% Love the guy but we can all see the missed passing opportunities, especially ones he sees late. I can’t count how many times Vuc has had good/early position only for DJ to see it late, allowing for Vuc’s defender to get better position making for a more difficult shot. Size matters.

He hasn't played "healthy" in two years... it might not happen at the snap of a finger like fans hope even if he does get healthy.

If anyone listened to the pod squad when they had Matt Lloyd, he said something interesting. He said they dont see Kelle as a PG but as a basketball player. I think He's talented enough play either backcourt position and thus, can play with MCW, DJ, or even Briscoe. MCW can also play with DJ.

Yes, we have 4 PGs but because of the versatility of 2 of them, I think we're able to keep them all. Not saying all will play but keep them, if the roster composition allows, and figure out plan later.

He's had enough time imo, lionshare of his rookie year, all this season and all this off-season.... If he's not healthy after this I don't know what to say.... I'll take a healthy fultz over DJ all day 24/7 365.... Put DJ back to the bench where he belongs, we need more bench scoring anyway

He did not start treatment until this year and he's not even fully practicing yet. What I'm saying is it might take him a while to get in game shape, shake off rust, adjust to new form in games, gain confidence, etc. He's basically going to be a rookie again as the past two years were wasted. Even if he's getting healthy he is still going to be playing catchup to get back to the prospect he was. Not going to be surprised at all if he struggles for a bit.

If he's healthy I fully expect him to beat out DJ easily.... Health is the key, if he's healthy.... Getting familiar with things isn't that hard I'm sure he's watching film... Plus it's not like Clifford is running anything special, his offense leaves a lot to be desired....i mean MCW can come in with one practice and is probably a better point guard than DJ(not player) I've seen MCW make passes that DJ can't because he has no vision.

If he's healthy it doesn't automatically mean his shot is going to go in or he can play with confidence from the jump. This shoulder issue sidelined him for two years, messed with his form, messed with his head... it might not be so simple the first season back. Have to consider all possibilities with such a strange situation. And let's not talk about DJ like he is trash... he still has his limitations, but he is making a positive impact this season. Everyone thought it would be a huge downgrade going from Elf to DJ, but that's not been the case for this roster. Fultz has to do more than just show up "healthy."

Well we"ll see I'm a big believer in fultz talent, if he's healthy I believe he can just show up and take DJ's spot. We took a big gamble on fultz but if we hit he has a chance to change the franchise. I have no problem with DJ...... On the bench... He'll be great there, has been great there in the past.... But he's a stop-gap nothing more or less

If Fultz shoots as good as Payton did (low bar, I know) he'll be even better. Can do the other things we all hoped Elf would.

Decided to look this up, and actually, he has been a net positive!

He is a positive because he gets more points (2.31 ORMP) than he gives up (-0.88 DRMP). His net RPM of 1.43 places him at 20th best PG in the NBA this year. His PER has him at 26th place with an acceptable 15+ PER.

Looking next year, the request for Fultz to become a top-20 PG is thus i) an improvement over Augustin and ii) a realistic up-side goal.

...

In conclusion: I would like the Magic to trade Augustin for a back-up PF so that Carter-Williams can be resigned over the whole of next season to be Fultz back-up. If Briscoe wins primary backup over Carter-Williams next off-season, even the better.

..

DJ isn't bad by any stretch, but having a small PG who isn't an elite playmaker or scorer is a detriment these days...or even in years past. Defense is incredibly important to the Magic because we do not have elite individual scorers. Having a PG that needs to be hidden on a nightly basis hinders this team IMO.
