Nope, that's about the right $ amount...I've seen teams buy 2nd round picks in the $1.5m to $2m range the past few seasons, so $2.2m sounds correct in relation to the rising cap.

Hmm okay, that's as much as the 24th pick makes. Not bad.

Buying a 2nd round pick is more of an option to buy, not the actual cost of the player and his contract. The actual cost of a 24th pick is $11m in guaranteed salary.

Sure, I was thinking first year salary. Informative though, thank you.

Actually they do have his rights if he signed an Exhibit 10 contract. The Magic will sign 6 players with these type of deals. If you hear during summer league that he's going to be attending training camp or joining Magic's G-L squad, then he was probably given an Exhibit 10 deal.

word is that all 3 people just signed a SL deal, not a contract like you highlighted above.

summer League contracts can also be exhibit 10's...the details of those contracts are rarely reported, you only find out about it later by how it evolves

Charania, Givony, and Scotto didn’t provide any additional details on what the Magic’s agreements with Jeffries, Law, and Pardon look like. Based on the lack of specificity, it’s probable that one or more of those deals is just for the Summer League and doesn’t lead to an actual NBA contract.

teams only get 6 exhibit 10’s - so it’s not every SL deal - guy coming from overseas probably got one - rest is probably who they like the best rt now

thing is, we just dont know. so we cant for sure say we have any of those players rights. So its not just like using a 2nd round pick on a player

The Magic can keep the rights to 6 players using exhibit 10 deals. They have or will use them. Just because they didn't let fans know on who doesn't mean they didn't.

Two of those exhibit 10's will be be turned into 2-way deals and some of the rest will join other guys in G-L that Magic have under control. Its similar to a 2nd Round player going to the G-L.

A key difference with 2nd Round picks is that those contracts are negotiated so because of that it normally requires two years of guaranteed money. In addition, to sign 2nd rounders, teams have to use cap space or an exception. Un-drafted guys signed with exhibit 10 gives teams way more flexibility without committing to guaranteed salary.

There could be an argument that a player drafted #60 is hypothetically higher quality than an un-drafted guy. But from a contract pov, there are advantages to un-drafted players.

Would anyone like to volunteer to make a Summer League Thread to keep track of signings and for the games coming up in just under two weeks?

but again, you dont know if they signed those deals or just regular summer deals. and less than half of any 2nd round pick gets 2 years guaranteed. for many years, its less than 1 quarter.

and what does that matter...do you feel like the FO needs to be more transparency about who they do or don't give exhibit 10's to?

You are trying too hard to make it seem like they wasted an asset, they did NOT. They just put the asset in storage for a year + got Lakers to pay for several of the exhibit 10's for them.

2nd round picks, if they get signed, get some kind of $ that impacts cap space + count as a roster spot. Exhibit 10's don't.

and you are trying to defend them with an example of a contract they may not be using at all. And looking at the specifics, these players would be foolish to sign it during summer league. We've seen our own players leave our summer league team for another and go on to get signed. And any player that gets a contract counts as a roster spot and cap space. Many 2nd round picks dont get that contract until they've proven themselves after summer league, but then you would still own their rights.

What am I defending? that the Magic will use Exh 10's, some in SL - some in training camp, just like every team will.

Why would it be foolish for players who are desperate at any opportunity to get into the NBA to take a guaranteed 1 year opportunity to latch onto a team. That's totally ridiculous. Tacko Fall just signed an exhibit 10 with Boston.

The players that you've seen leave Magic SL squad are players the Magic didn't give an exh 10 or didn't draft.

The Magic can't offer every SL invite an exh 10...the limit is 6 and they likely want to save some for camp invitees.

Also, I said 2nd round picks count towards roster and cap if they get signed.

Again, if a player gets an exh 10, the Magic have their rights for a year and they become affiliate players in the G-League.

So has this Lakers pick been confirmed as their own 2020 second rounder, unprotected? That's okay I guess, given Weltman's defense of it in Denton's tweet. I don't fully agree with it; I would say this team needs to find more talent/positive assets in any way that it can. But I can accept it.

Yes, it's Lakers's unprotected 2nd round pick in 2020 and Los Angeles is one injury away from having a better pick than #46.

Respectfully, whether you know who he is or not, I was making the point that the Magic have already signed a guy that was mocked ahead of the pick that some are complaining was traded. So the outrage is a little overblown.

Also, it's not like Orlando signed him or has his rights. This is just a showing-off for every team including us, if we'd like to sign him. Hopefully him being on our squad (if he's good) would give us some leverage.

True but he/his agent have chosen Orlando as the place where the chance to ‘show off’ if you like is the greatest. Not surprising really due to the backcourt being the weakest area for the Magic. You’d have to think that gives the Magic an advantage if he did look like a signable prospect.
