Exactly. The defense has been alot better than at this point last year. Shots will start dropping soon.Knightro wrote:ORLMagicGirl15 wrote:They will not be able to maintain their defense if they offensive does not improve. Fair point.
My counter would be that given their personnel, I'm much more confident the Magic will be able to maintain a top 5 DTRG and DREB team than I am confident they will remain the worst offensive team in the league by a wide margin.
They don't even have to make massive gains either. The Magic only need to improve the offense to around 20th in the league to be a sure fire playoff team with a top 5 defense and rebounding squad.

I'm close to positive that we will not finish a top 5 defensive team. I would need to see the numbers, but its felt like teams have missed a ton of open shots against us to start the season.

Yeah, I get that. But man what in the world happened to our offense? I really hope this team improve soon.

Re: Orlando Magic Offensive Ranks so far
I'm not particularly worried about our team. In my mind, we are in a chrysalis state.
The future of our team is:
PG: Fultz
SG: (someone we acquire by trading Gordon/Vuc for, perhaps Ross in the interim)
SF: Chuma (perhaps)
PF: Isaac
C: Bamba
The "veterans" on this team will figure it out and up their trade value, but that's ultimately what they are, place holders and valuable trade assets to round out the team. If we ride them to a second round or conference final appearance, great, I'd love that but to make a championship team, they need to be traded for skill players/shooters to join the Fultz/Isaac/Bamba core.

League average right now on WIDE OPEN shots is 36.9%
Cavs 5-22 on wide open shots - 22.7%
Hawks 6-15 on wide open shots - 40%
Raptors 8-18 on wide open shots - 44.4%
Knicks 5-14 on wide open shots - 35.7%
Bucks 10-25 on wide open shots - 40%
Nuggets 4-13 on wide open shots - 30.8%
Thunder 8-19 on wide open shots - 42.1%
4 of 7 opponents shot ABOVE league average on wide open shots and the Magic lost all four of those games.
So the Magic have gotten unlucky slightly more than they've gotten lucky with opponent's shooting.
The real pisser game is the Denver game.
The Magic defended well only allowing 13 wide open looks for the entire game AND the Nuggets shot poorly, but Orlando equally shot like garbage and the Magic got quadrupled up at the FT line (7 makes to 28 makes).
Conversely, the Cavs game was not nearly as well defended as the numbers would led you to believe. The Cavs shot 22 wide open shots which is a very high number and just couldn't knock down anything.
