Re: Summer 2020 cap room
The lesser of all evils is Fournier not opting out. If he opts and leaves, we don't have the cap space to replace him for next season. If he opts out and re-signs long term, then god have mercy on my soul. All the options suck.

Exactly but Evan hating is blinding people
No path to 2021 cap room in sight. You guys just keep repeating this in hopes of a plan... there is no plan. You'd have to see a Hinkie 76ers style clear out of contracts to get to space.
Also I don't see how Evan opting in helps 2021 space more than Evan opting out.
Your content is empirically wrong.
Huge drop in salary LINK
With respect. Of course.

It's always w/ respect doc FWIW.
But your link doesn't prove me wrong. You seeing a low salary number isn't indicative of cap space. It could be correct if we let Fultz/Isaac/Fournier/any players between now and 1.5 years from now walk. It's hard to project so far out but with Fultz and Isaac holds alone we are down to 20 ish million with like.. 6 roster spots to fill? Either way even if it's possible to carve out some space in 2021 (which I doubt personally), my point is I see absolutely nothing that points to that year being the plan more than any other year.

Respectfully:
The Magic has almost no monies to spend in the next off season, and is projected to have a boat and one/half of monies the subsequent.
Please explain my failed logic.

The way I have it:
Vuc 24
AG 16.4
EF cap hold if he opts in 25.5
Ross 13.5
Fultz cap hold 36
Aminu 10.18
Isaac cap hold 22
Bamba 7.56
totals 155 million for 8 players. This is not what it will look like of course. Evan could go else where. Fultz/Isaac cap holds are pretty high, obviously Fultz deal wont be that big he just has a big cap hold.
The underlying point though is I just see nothing they've done "point us" to any summer of spending.
Can they get to space by letting Evan go, starting Fultz/Isaac at (example) 20 million each? Sure we could have around 12 million ish to play with but we'd also have 5 roster spots to take up still.

Spotrac is a better site for keeping across the team's payroll, IMO. It breaks down the cap holds owed for each season, too, like here for 2021.
We only have $70M of 'active cap' on the players who are contracted through that season:
Vuc
Gordon
Ross
Aminu
Bamba
But below that you'll see the cap holds. If Evan opts in this summer, then his cap hold next summer is $25M. So we're automatically at $95M just with his cap hold. If he resigns this summer, then that figure will be added to the $70M, too. On top of his cap hold, Fultz has a $24.5M cap hold, and Isaac has a $14.8M cap hold. There's basically $65M of cap holds in 3 of our better assets right there.
To have any hope at cap space to chase some of the names in 2021, we would need to either sign Fultz and Isaac to early extensions at below market rates, and likely TWO of Vuc, Fournier and Gordon will have to be moved if we want to partner with Fultz and Isaac.
The plan should be about shaping the team you'll have locked in for the 2021 offseason that you will want to try to sell to Giannis/etc as a viable contender if he were to jump ship and join them. Miami is doing that with the foundations they're building now. Currently, we look on course to hamstring our cap flexibility which would force us into making trades to try to secure talent. It can be done (Butler did it this season forcing his way to Miami in a s&t), but the franchise needs to be a desirable one, and for most of the last decade the review of the Magic has been "I just don't know what they're doing down there...". We gotta fix that first, and locking up Vuc and Fournier to long term contracts isn't the answer.

Re: Summer 2020 cap room
1. ATL - $50.4M
2. NYK - $44.6M
3. DET - $34.3M
4. MIA - $26.5M
5. CHA - $25.7M
6. PHX - $24.8M
Minnesota and Portland could both get to cap space, but are more likely to stay over the cap.
Atlanta and Phoenix are my 2 spots Fournier could end up. I really don’t see him opting in and playing without his next contract. Players just don’t do that unless you’re lebron KD Kyrie etc etc. Evans having a career year and will want a 4 year deal.

Today, the Magic has $68,666,224 tied up in salary for before the 2021/22 season.

Cap holds.
Isaac will have a cap hold of around $22M and Fultz will have a cap hold in excess of $30M. If Fournier opts in this summer, he will have a cap hold of more than $25M. To get down to $68M in payroll, the Magic would have to renounce all of these players.
Suppose that we re-sign Fournier for $20M per annum this summer and we negotiate extensions for Fultz and Isaac at a conservative estimate of $15M each, our payroll that summer is already up to $118M.
Miami will have a lot of cap room because they have dumped a lot of their long-term commitments and they will be capitalizing on a huge free agent crop before their rookie-scale deals come up for extensions.
Aside from everything else we have screwed up, we have very poor timing. Hennigan did as well. He tanked for a crappy draft pool. What made Gabriel's gambit work was that Orlando hit free agency as one of the only teams with money to spend and a nice crop of free agent talent available.

I guess you ignored everything I wrote. But yes that’s not incorrect.
If guys never needed new contracts and they let us play with 7 players on our roster we could have space.

Opt in is the only option.
If he opts out you have to trade vuc for hield but become very thin at center

It would be hilarious if you follow through with going to the Hawks and Fournier follows you. You can't escape the man.
