He was here and did nothing while Hennigan looted the franchise, so ..he deserves those Minnesota winters.

This is like a shrug move for me because its not like the track record while he has been here has been fantastic...

BTW, it does seem like a promotion for him so easy decision for him to make.

Its a few days old but I've just come across this article where Josh Robbins talks about the hire:

https://theathletic.com/3351904/2022/06/06/matt-lloyd-timberwolves-front-office/

The main thing being:

"What I do know via Magic sources is that Lloyd saw potential stardom in Donovan Mitchell when Lloyd was the interim GM in 2017. Mitchell went 13th that year, while the Magic went with Jonathan Isaac at No. 6. I wonder if Lloyd would have selected Mitchell over Isaac if Lloyd had remained in charge."

Maybe the other guys should have listened to him over the years?!

Yawns...who? We've sucked since he's been here for the most part. I don't get all the fanfare. Lets be honest he'll be forgotten in no time.

He still was a big part of the draft process so technically he wasn’t able to sell Mitchell to the FO. Looking back at it I’m shocked Isaac went 6th. Dude screamed role player in NBA with limited offense and was such at FSU. That draft was hella weak as well.
A scoring guard.. never heard of one.

statistically, he was up there.

Also at that time, we needed a player like Isaac to pair with Vuc.

Isaac looks really bad now because he isn’t able to stay healthy.

Lloyd was a holdover from the previous regime and there was a reason he was kept on.

Wow. Sounds very un-Wolvsey. I’m strangely hopeful w Lore, A-Rod, Connelly. Lloyd, etc in the fold. Too many years of being a joke nba franchise and one of the biggest laughingstocks in all of pro sports.

Getting the #1 pick was huge for the Magic. Hopefully things are on the up for both teams.

I sincerely hope that Lloyd is why we drafted Cole Anthony. I hope that he saw that same stardom and that he can convince the powers that be in Minnesota that it would be worthwhile for them to give up the 19th pick for Cole.

As much as people compliment Lloyd, he's been a big part of a front office that has failed to land a star through the draft (or trade or free agency) for the past decade. So how good was he?

Having said that, I don't doubt the Josh Robbins story that Lloyd was interested in Donovan Mitchell before WeltHam took charge and drafted someone long-and-lanky. Let's just say hypothetically that Lloyd was more aligned with Hennigan's draft philosophy, since Hennigan brought him here. I could see Mitchell as a Hennigan reach at #6, whereas WeltHam tends to just pick whoever is slotted at a particular spot.
