This is probably my favorite Weltman signing of his tenure.

Everyone wanted Tyus Jones for years.

I remember two seasons ago at home against the Wizards (the one where Cole and Suggs recreated the no look lob photo form Wade to Lebron) multiple fans screamed “Tyus you are A MAGIC” during a blowout win against them. Actually got a puzzled reaction from their bench too where they all turned around like wtf? I thought it was weird too at the time.

This has been one of those acquisitions you just knew would happen at some point for some reason.

Jett Howard pick has to be studied.

11th pick

year one -red shirted for no reason
year two- couldn't beat players who won't be in a league very next year for pt
year three -had to bribe teams to get rid of him

That whole thing was complete fiasco for a moment he was elected. i still can't wrap my head around notion of passing on Livley or Dick.

There was league-wide shock when he was taken at 11. I wanted to trade one or both picks, but second preference was Jett's teammate Bufkin. Talented kid but has been injury plagued.

I was on "trade pick" bandwagon as well. made no sense to add two rookies. Could have traded both for what i cared. But that 11th pick never made any sense.

Now, looking back how much, but on different draft Grizzlies had to pay to get, makes it even worst.

Probably should have called Nets to flip 11 for 22 + asset :dontknow:

The 2023 Grizzlies with Tyus Jones and Desmond Bane on the court together: 870 minutes, 115.6 Off. Rtg., 110.9 Def Rtg.

Grizzlies team in 2023: 114.7 Off. Rtg., 110.7 Def. Rtg.

This roster needed fixing or someone was going to be fired.

Oddly enough, we have somehow managed to keep the core players in tact minus Mo thus far. This beats the last time Orlando brass blew up the team by picking the wrong players to get by quite a bit.

I have a lot of questions regarding AB, Jett, this is truly a bad draft in my head as of now. It still may take another year or two but that entire draft class just seems top heavy followed by easily forgettable role players like Cason Wallace (who just got a ring), Jarace Walker (who was in the finals) and Not Blake Lively (who had a W Finals run last year).

We had a world where we could have gotten interesting contender level role players and got possibly AB.

Weltman has whiffed hard on a lot of first round picks between Mo Bamba, Chuma Okeke, and Jett Howard. Cole Anthony bought out. Jury out on AB and TDS. Punts every 2nd round pick. He’s such a bad evaluator of talent. Thank goodness he got lucky in the lottery in 2022 and Suggs found his jumper last year. After 8 years, I think it’s time for a fresh pair of eyes on this team. We’re on Paolo time. With a hard cap, you can’t just keep blowing picks like that. Unless you trade the all away for Desmond Bane.

We definitely need to level up our scouts for the next few years, especially since we’ll probably picking in the 20s and we don’t have the best record for players drafted after the lottery. I genuinely like TDS and AB and I really hope they take a leap this season.

Honestly this is part of the reason I can’t be mad at all the picks we gave up in the Bane deal.. might as well get some value out of them.

Weltman’s draft record has been terrible outside of the top 10 - after 8 years you would think that you’d atleast accidentally hit a home run (or even a base hit) with a later pick

Okeke and Jett were obvious busts before they stepped foot on an NBA court and were chosen so high for non-basketball reasons

I hope TdS and Jase break the trend here

It truly is, I usually don't talk about the F.O., because that is what they do for a living, but I have 2 issues with them in the past few years.
1. that pick
2. not having a big on a two-way last year to use when Mo & WCJ were out.

Didn't he draft Giannis with pick 15?
Thats one of the best middle draft picks in NBA history.

Well, I must say, Weltman is a genius.

He got solved his weakness in drafting by getting rid of it. Problem solved.

He's an average drafter. People whiff in the top 10 all the time lol. Paolo/Franz/Suggs are hits, Cole has had a solid career for a 15th pick. The rest are whiffs but the whiff rate on most GMs are pretty similar except a select few. We would've had Bouknight here if our posters wanted to take the reins.

2nd rounder evaluation hasn't been good though.

Imo, he also did hit on JI, but bad luck on injury.

That’s so difficult on drafting cause you can only do so much.

What’s his success rate since Matt Lloyd left though?

Hammond did. Weltman scouted him and left for Toronto before that draft. But while walking out the door he told John to seriously look at drafting him.

He was also heavily involved in drafting Siakam and getting Van Vleet to Toronto.

Remember Tyus Jones is like the worst defender in the league. I think his success has more to do with Jonathan Isaac’s health this season, so he can cover for him. I wouldn’t put him on the floor without JI.

I’m all for offense-first players. Just set your expectations. Maybe Mosley can get him to hustle a bit.

There is reason why he is a backup and signed 1 year $7M. For the Magic is about shoring up weaknesses with these moves and so far they are.

He took less money last season to prove himself as a starter on a good team and failed.
Now back to his true NBA role, a good backup PG.

That entire team failed on all levels... Wasn't just on him. He started and had a really good season in Washington (I understand they weren't good though).

Im not worried about his defense cause he is gonna play next to suggs, bane & ab almost all the time.

He is in the perfect scenario for him in my eyes. Gets to be a true back up pg and also play off of p5 & Franz.

The whole world had Dick as the pick here. And many on this board were Lively fans pre draft.
I also recall a lot of pre-draft interest in Jordan Hawkins, Keyonte George, and Cam Whitmore for Orlando with this slot.

The point: NOBODY is cherry picking on players that were better than Howard. There were loads scouted as known to be a good Orlando fit.

Now Orlando has a 5.5M contract it can barely afford to pay in Howard. Sad he couldn't be thrown into the Memphis deal.
