man love his relentless ability to attack the paint, but his shooting is super concerning. he hasn't had one game where he has shot lights out. Dude just cant hit a shot. If he can somehow break out of this, he can be an allstar, otherwise hes basically a Marcus smart clone

Re: The Official Jalen Suggs Thread
Suggs continues to figure it out.
Not only is he showing strides as a finisher around the basket as he learns to maneuver/position himself around NBA length, but the decisions he’s starting to make on those drive and kicks is even more encouraging.
The development of that skill is what will make the players around him better, && at the end of the day that’s what we drafted him to do. He’s starting to check every box that had him so high on draft boards in one of the deepest player pools in recent memory.
Elite defense, elite motor, elite athleticism, finishing, playmaking, and winning plays on both ends of the court. That’s why he’s here.
Suggs was a 33% 3pt shooter in college. That was never marketed as a day one translatable skill. The hope, && what continues to be the hope, is that his solid shot release && free throw% will eventually translate to average to above average NBA 3pt shooting.
I’m trusting the process on it, while continuing to enjoy all the other things he currently brings to this team.

Re: The Official Jalen Suggs Thread
It would be hilarious to read some of comments about player like him if he is on other team or is second round pick and compare it to current comments.
His numbers are historic. Just not in fashion you want to be historic.
I don't understand need to defend and make false arguments how he "brings lot to a table " "makes winning plays" whie it's obvious that he has been awful. He is rookie and he will probably improve ( not like it's really possible to get much worst) but raving about him is just pointless.
IN last 10 games alone, on Magic ,he is second worst in net rating, worst in efficiency and in same time second most (over)used player behind Cole in usage.
Last 4-5 years, list of nba players that get to play 20 games at least and have eFG under 42% is around 15-22 a year. Half of them don't get a chance to play next year.
And now somebody will dig up Billups drafted 30 years ago or Kyle Lowry drafted 15 years ago to make overarching point about improvments and just ignore army of Marcus Smarts and Dennis Smiths every year.
Jalen Suggs should improve at basketball becaues he is rookie. That improvments have to be massive ones in order for him to become average nba player. Right now he is way below it.

Re: The Official Jalen Suggs Thread
Offensively, he hasn't shot the ball well for his first 37 games. We have 24 games left, 16 games at home, hopefully, he finds his rhythm. We've had a historically hard schedule so far. I heard David Steele talking about how we've never completed our west coasts trips or had this many road games this early in the season. We probably need to bench more players down the stretch to continue to lose.pepe1991 wrote:It would be hilarious to read some of comments about player like him if he is on other team or is second round pick and compare it to current comments.

Marcus Smart and Tony Allen were players that never really developed offense skill. not going to write off a player 36 games into his career. different players develop over different timelines. Some explode right away, some take a year or 2. He has legit NBA defense right now (not calling him 1st team, but he has legit defense). Also average to above average passer.

Re: The Official Jalen Suggs Thread
Early on in the season I feel like Suggs has been a target. Everyone saw him standing on the table after the halfcourt shot and his summer league performance. Players have really been up to play him. I even think the refs looked at him harder early on and he was getting way more offensive fouls than players normally get.

Re: The Official Jalen Suggs Thread
Bledsoe is his floor, Suggs might be more of an alpha tho. If Mosley gave him the green light and cleared Cole out of the way, Suggs would average 20 FGA per game.nicnac215 wrote:basketballRob wrote:Suggs is similar to a rookie Bledsoe so far.

Re: The Official Jalen Suggs Thread
I'm not really worried about Suggs at all. He's going to continue to improve.
He can already defend capably at the NBA level. He already plays with better than normal effort on both ends of the floor. It appears he understands how and when to pass at a reasonably high level as well.
His finishing package at the rim has already started to uptick from where it was earlier in the year.
His ultimate ceiling will depend on how well his 3PT shot develops and how much he can improve his ball handling/ball control.
If they improve a lot... we're all gonna be thrilled.

Re: The Official Jalen Suggs Thread
His rookie play so far is more in the Marcus Smart / MCW mold than Westbrook (plenty of games and highlights for all of them available for those who forgot or was too young to remember). He is not identical to any of them, as MCW was much more crafty with better handle and Smart had a post game, but all were defensive specialists that brings effort every night and may occasionally score on low efficiency. Offensively, Suggs is not a threat from outside, prefers straight line drives and can finish through contact, but struggles to handle and protect the ball if pressured.
That is what I'm seeing. What is going to happen nobody knows for sure.

Depending on how much stock you put into Basketball Reference's Game Score metric, last night was the best game of Jalen Suggs' career.

20p/10a in under 26 minutes is a pretty good game for the kid....all he has to do in his ROOKIE year is continue to show flashes and eventually improve that shot...if RJ can do it, Suggs can do it

Remember when people doubted Dipo and Harris and we gave up on them. He's a rookie, he needs time, is he a 'star', probably not, but we knew that. He could be a very very very good basketball player though

I often agree with what you write, but you could not be more wrong about Suggs.
OK, you are pretty close if you wear an eye patch and only watch half of the court. But RAPTOR and WAR have Suggs solidly in the middle of the pack of NBA players and in the upper 1/3rd of rookies.
Want to know who is having a historically bad season?
Jalen Green, the guy many magic fans wanted to trade up to draft. Jalen Green (by RAPTOR or WAR) is the worse player in the NBA by a wide margin.

Wow.... I swear.... you spend SOOOOOOOOOO much effort to prove players on this team are just that damn bad. NO ONE knows how a player is going to turn out. there are tons of factors beyond the numbers that you want to hang onto. Numbers are not fun .... but with the flashes that he makes and the pitbull and never back down attitude.... I see no reason why Suggs cannot make his #5 selection more than worth it.
As i've said in the past ... most of us appreciate your deep dives... but the continuous trashing of everything that seems "Magic"... makes it hard to wonder why you are fan. The grey areas should be allow us to dream and have hopes for what this team can be.
So.... if a suggs game against a league best occurs... i'ma hold onto it and hope that this is a part of a transitioning for him. Great game Suggs... hope you can keep it up!
