Also, the Magic have never intended to really trade Dwight ... they will never do that, it's all a show.
Where this leads to probably a 50/50 chance he resigns with the Magic. Alot will depend on how well Dwight and Jaque Vaughn mesh.

I agree with Dawg. Orlando is not going to trade Dwight, or at the least not untill the trade deadline.
He has changed his mind many times, why not one more time? After he sees his new coach and the direction of new management. Not to mention, he will know that if we do not trade him and he leaves he will lose his Bird rights. That's a threat of losing a lot of money.
So we all need to cheer for and love Dwight until he is no longer wearing a Orlando Magic jersey!

Your living in fantasy world. This is the worst roster we have had in the Dwight era. We likely have a rookie coach. In all reality this team needs to let Dwight go so they can get out of the bad stuff that Otis did to this franchise. We are years from contending unless we landed a great free agent. By waiting all we do is give other teams time to begin opening up cap space to get Dwight. If Dwight isn't traded soon my bet Bynum signs extension with Lakers and Dwight will use Chicago and Dallas next year as leverage to go to Brooklyn. Chicago could get under the cap if amnesty Boozer. If he doesn't go Brooklyn he signs in Dallas or Chicago.

Dwight Howard Reiterates Desire For Trade During Meeting With Hennigan

Orlando Magic General Manager Rob Hennigan met with the franchise’s disenchanted superstar Dwight Howard on Wednesday in Los Angeles, sources have confirmed to RealGM.

Hennigan traveled to Los Angeles to have a face-to-face discussion with Howard with the hopes of persuading him to back off his trade request and allow the organization more time to build a championship contender. Hennigan, however, was unsuccessful in his pitch as Howard reiterated his desire to leave Orlando as soon as possible, according to sources.

Hennigan’s pitch to Howard had a heavy focus on the two men developing a relationship that would be valuable to the Magic moving forward. He expressed a sincere interest in getting to know the six-time All-Star and working with him to improve the team. Howard, however, was expecting an outline of how the team planned to improve and get back to a championship-contending level, something he didn’t receive during the hour-long meeting, according to sources.

Howard was staunch in his stance and again made it clear to Hennigan that he has no desire to return to Orlando. He told the 30-year-old general manager that he would “never sign another contract with the Magic,” sources tell RealGM.

During the meeting, Howard informed Hennigan that he would be willing to re-sign with the Lakers at the end of the 12-13 season if the two teams were able to complete a trade.

The scenarios Howard was open to during the meeting were: An immediate trade to the Lakers, a January trade to the Brooklyn Nets or a clean break at the end of the 2012-13 season. But he was clear that he would not return to the Magic, choosing to leave as a free agent after the season, sources told RealGM.

Hennigan informed Howard that he didn’t have any deals in the works and wasn’t quite sure how to respond to what he was told, according to sources. Hennigan was noncommittal on any of the discussed scenarios as the meeting ended.

Hennigan’s noncommittal approach has only frustrated Howard more as it’s believed that several acceptable offers have been presented to the Magic only to be turned down due to a lack of a true intent to trade him, sources said.

There is now a belief that Hennigan and the Magic have half-heartedly entered into trade talks, resulting in frustration among the many teams rumored to have been included in the ongoing negotiations.

Trading Howard, however, is a process the Magic won’t rush as they understand his value on and off the court and aren’t willing, at this point, to lose him without acceptable compensation.

i share everyone's frustration w/ the situation, and would kinda like to see it done sooner rather than later, but i've been trying to envision the leverage situations later and later in the season, and i think it would play to our favor.

by the deadline, (past january) 1) you have bkln re-emerging as a potential suitor. 2) lal's desire for him wouldn't have diminished any, and 3) provided dwight has played some and showed his back is healthy, all teams' injury fears should be allayed. at the deadline, look at the picture from la's shoes: you have a chance to trade for dwight howard, who wants to come there and will re-sign long-term, but you have to make the trade now because you don't have room to sign him... bkln, for that matter, is in the same boat, but they clearly don't have anything we want. both teams would really have to step it up, if they don't want to lose him to dallas or atlanta as a fa.

the more i think about it the more that three-team thing with houston seems a likely reality. i could envision the lakers getting bynum to agree to an extension early in the season, under the guise of "giving up" on dwight howard. then, flipping him to hou in that three-way for dwight. (hou's gotta pony up some more, and maybe lal caves and takes on some more of our crap).

Just stop it! Dwight is gone, anything aside from overpaid talent (Lopez) is better than nothing. I wish we would have traded him last year but I digress...I'd send him to Toronto for a single pick and it'd be a win in my eyes. Anything greater is a bonus.

All that "let's keep him" for any reason chatter should just die. Take Houston's picks and ride along. Rebuilding sucks, but it's a helluva lot better than seeing a first to second round exit the next few years. At least in a rebuild there's hope for tomorrow. We were/are in cap purgatory and were not gonna build a champion soon anyways.

Go Magic!

Send him to the D-League for the entire season. Do not give him what he wants. That would fit him well.
Then let him choose between teams with cap space. Watch LA and Brooklyn implode with trades in order to have enough cap.

At this point I'd rather just have the cap space instead of anything that teams will offer the Magic.

Question from a non-magic fan:

If the Hawks call for a trade and willing to give up Al Horford + Jeff Teague for Howard. Would/Should Orl take it?

Speaking as a Mavs fan, I DON'T hope Dwight ends up in Dallas, because that guy is a spoiled jerk. The way he has treated your franchise is wrong, and I don't want Dallas to be the next franchise he bullies around.

Not sure about Atl saying no though.

Danny Ferry is clearing salaries so they could make a run at Howard and Chris Paul. And in order to make this move, they would need to move Horford (I am assuming they are keeping Josh Smith, cause he and Howard are good friends). Of course they could wait till the off-season, but he may end up with another team.

If Howard plays in ATL this season, they could offer him with the biggest contract + his good buddy Josh Smith will help convince him to say, and they can convince Paul to come to ATL. It's worth a shot.

I don't see what Howard did that was so bad. He let it be known since last season that he wants out and the Orlando front office has tried for over a year to not send him away. This is like when a guy breaks up with a girl and she refuses to move on. Just let it go, Dwight has no beef with the fans in Orlando or the city, he just wants out but Orlando thinks that smooth talking and pleading will convince the mild manner guy and he'll have a change of heart. It's really kind of pathetic, just trade the man and stop drawing this out, it's already been about a year of this.

You kidding me? The team fires the GM and Stan get scanned mostly because of Dwight, all this after Dwight had signed the extension mind you, and then he flip flops again to wanting out even more than before? And then holding the team hostage by limiting where HE wants to play? He's not doing Orlando any favors by saying don't trade me to that team, he's doing the other team the favor. He IS UNDER CONTRACT and screwing with the team now and it's future. And you say he;s done nothing wrong? I bet your kids are going to grow up being spoiled brats too and you'll think it's ok.

You are all forgetting, he is not a restricted free agent now, he is under contract. A suspension is more than valid here, let him sit and NOT get paid. And bring on the players union, the guy is violating his contract. Take it to court.

Dwight would still get paid. Magic can suspend him, but it will be suspension with pay. the only way you can withhold pay is if Dwight committed a crime or brawl (Artest). maybe the Magic can convince the Player's Association and Stern that Dwight made "comments detrimental to the team" and that merits a suspension without pay, but i doubt that would work. in addition, Dwight could counter sue and win (depends on how his contract is written)

I'm sure this has been discussed, but I am very concerned about a private company steering a star player to a certain team or market.

The only explanation for Howard wanting only Brooklyn or maybe LA is a massive product endorsement bonus. It's not like there aren't other great situations for him to go to for basketball reasons, but he's not even considering those. That means it all comes down to this private deal. There's no other reasonable explanation.

If an outside company can change the future of the league, the league loses a ton of credibility. There's no level playing field.

Here's a few questions:

1) Why has the league been silent on this? Do they actually endorse this since it makes them money by placing stars in the biggest markets?
That I can understand (though not abide) since greed tends to rule.

What I don't understand is:

2) Why has the army of NBA media not covered this? It's a great story and needs one person who is actually a journalist and will do some investigating to cover. Is the entire NBA media nothing but gossip columnists and stat geeks?

Are there no real journalists left at all?

it might be unconstitutional if the NBA got involved in such a way.
