Really glad he is playing as a big. He's got the build for it.

AG played backup center in the playoffs.Knightro wrote:Paolo is obviously big enough to play some minutes as a small ball center for the Magic, so really it comes down to his attitude and effort about doing it.
Last season he simply did not show enough desire on the glass or enough physicality defensively to make it work.
But if those traits exist inside of him and it’s just a matter of unlocking them, then it’s a possibility moving forward for him, sure.
I'm a little concerned after seeing Paolo with ice on his knee the other day.

It was good to see him setting screens, blocking shots, boxing out, moving the ball ect. Not a bad game for Paolo from what i was able to see. He didnt get many opportunities to score but was solid.

From the Athletic game recap
Link
In somewhat of a surprise, Kerr used Paolo Banchero as the backup 5, behind Jackson. Banchero plays more power forward and on the wing for the Magic.
“He’s going to play some 5,” Kerr said of Banchero, the reigning NBA Rookie of the Year who scored seven points Monday. “One of the things we really found in ’21 in the Tokyo Olympics was having a 5 that can push the ball in transition (as Bam Adebayo did) and create plays is very difficult for FIBA teams to handle. He can play some 4, as he showed, but he’ll play plenty of 5 as well.”

Banchero was really engaged on defense last night. I think Kerr using him as their Draymond Green will help allow Banchero to diversify his game. Expanding his playmaking in the halfcourt as a screener and roll man and keeping him engaged and communicating as a defender on switches and protecting the basket will be good for us in the long run.

I just like on a team full of stars Paolo was still seen.

I agree. I think the key will be his rebounding, which is more about effort than skill. For the role that Kerr envisions for Paolo to work, he has to grab the board and push it. If he can’t get the rebound in traffic then he won’t be able to feature his ball handling and vision in transition.

Similarly I remember Dwight always saying that him playing a specific role for team Usa greatly helped him for the Magic, seeing the game and players in a different way.

I am so glad he chose Kevon Looney role for team USA instead of being a top dog for Italian team

There were some editorials about how Banchero needs to improve his rebounding and boxing out. Being a "Draymond Green" will give him those required reps to improve these core defensive skills.

A huge number of youtube shorts on this. They can't be linked, so just search for today's Banchero links.

Re: FIBA World Cup - Banchero, F. Wagner, M. Wagner, Bitadze and Ingles All Set to Play
The guy who churns out the (mostly worthless) ORL Magic daily content described Paolo’s game as being impactful beyond nearly invisible stats…for example. Just one rebound (I think?) but tremendous effort to unselfishly box out so others can grab easy defensive rebounds leading to breakouts…if that’s true, I’m impressed. That’s a winning role, one that’s commonly attributed to Brook Lopez, who has contributed mightily to MIL’s team rebounding and WINNING, despite long ago abandoning the gaudy stats he normally put up for boards & scoring.
I have mixed feelings about this. (1) I want Paolo to take over and dominate-not defer, showing the world that he’s the NBA’s next superstar, but (2) could this young Uber-talented guy meld limitless abilities with a true dedication to “whatever helps us win”?
I’m not sure what’s his ideal direction, I think he’s built for stardom but unselfish team play and humility to do the little stuff that coaches and teammates love is certainly a good thing.

I think if Banchero wanted to average over 20 ppg a night, he could do that right now. But you nailed it. Your superstar player has to be more than just a bucket getter to win basketball games. This team needs the playmaking in the worst way and I think taking advantage of playmaking out of the center position (Draymond Green, Bam Adebayo, Nikola Jokic) is a wave that only few teams can actually ride if they have the personnel for it. Banchero can score. There's no doubt about it. But, for us to win and for him to become the best version of himself, it'll benefit all of us for him to get comfortable with rebounding and playmaking. Banchero has such great feel for the game. I think Banchero has all the chops to become a Swiss army knife at the 4 or 5. I do believe to fully unlock that potential, our team probably needs to capitalize on better shooting out of our guards. Jokic and Green are probably great on their own. They're champions because they make sweet magic on ever screen and roll with Jamal Murray and Stephen Curry.
