Otis Smith: Magic didn’t inquire about Chris Paul

Orlando Magic General Manager Otis Smith said this afternoon that the Magic have not inquired about Chris Paul’s availability in a potential trade with the New Orleans Hornets.

Early Tuesday, the website FanHouse, citing an unnamed league source, reported that the Magic were among a group of teams that had asked about Paul.

Asked minutes ago by the Orlando Sentinel whether the Magic made such an inquiry, Smith answered flatly, “Nope.”

“It’s the first I’ve heard of it,” Smith said.

Then, Smith corrected himself. He said he had read an e-mail message a little while earlier from another reporter who had asked if the story was accurate.

But you get the idea.

Even if the Magic had asked the Hornets about Paul’s availability, it would seem almost impossible that Paul would be available. Paul is the Hornets’ franchise player.

Since I had Smith on the phone, I asked him a couple other questions. He said he’s still inclined to hold on to the 29th overall pick in Thursday’s draft. And he also said he’s not close to making any trades.

Smokescreen? :D

Why would the hornets trade for a PG when if Paul was traded the one position where we are set is PG? If a third team is really willing to take on Okafor wouldn't we just move him there ourselfs? I mean that is the hornets one truly bad contract. This rumor smells of bs to me, the nets offered harris/#3 even that is a better proposal then this. BTW our owner has come out and said there is no chance Paul is being traded - it could be a smoke screen, but I can't see it happening, not this offseason.

BTW, your owner hasn't come out. He's on his way out...

the Deng deal, the "VC to DC" deal, and now talk of Turk are all smoke screen's..

if we do land Paul, Jameer will be dealt. (that's a fact) I think CP3 is Otis' priority (not just my pipe dream) and I feel confident he's been in discussion with Bower and the Hornets about a deal.

there were too many source(s) including the Twitter world and Pingalore's story today/tonight for this to be fabricated, "made up", or just a rumor with/without "leg's".

Obviously it's been visited before (via trade deadline) but no solution. Otis doesn't show his cards, especially if it means dealing Jameer and/or Vince. If there's no deal at the moment (which there isn't) of course he's going to "like" this team, these player's. He doesn't want to hurt anyone's value or morale (if a deal doesn't work).

Shinn may not want to part with Paul, but it's inevitable (NOW or later this season) when Nola begins to struggle, CP3 may/may not push for a deal but you'll hear his unhappiness and "it takes a toll" yada yada.. so rather deal with that then, why not NOW?

The Turk news is ridiculous. My brother is nine, he knows that's a "smoke screen" lol

How about this 3 way as a possibility: http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachi ... Id=27wkrc8

New Orleans ends up saving 3.7 million when you factor in exceptions, plus they could move Devin Harris to another team(as could the Magic with Jameer) to save even more money.

for a team in "cost cutting" mode like the Hornets, I'd be all for developing Darren Collison and the younger guy's, not hindering his development and confidence.

CP3/Collison is very similar to the Dwight/Gortat situation in which our STRONGEST position was the Center position as there's is the point guard position. You saw how that worked (in the playoffs) and you've heard Gortat's displeasure of limited PT/mins, which has kind of forced the hand of Otis to deal Gortat to a team needing a center and pleasing Gortat's camp.

The same situation will happen in New Orleans if CP3 isn't dealt. Problem here, winning solves just about everything, losing doesn't. It's GOOD to have depth, but to be successful you need to "round" some of that depth out, address other needs, as New Orleans can/SHOULD do.

There is 3 things I lol'd at when I clicked on the link.

A) There is no way we are able to aquire both West and Paul
B) If NOH is wanting to cut costs, they sure don't take on Rashard's contract
C) According to the summary below each team it says the Nets wins go down by 3... that means the team only wins 6 GAMES!!!

LOL. Otis is truly a comedian with that line. Maybe it is something bigger then CP3 but either way if there is a trade or nothing at all no one can help but smile or laugh from picturing Otis say that,

I could be entirely incorrect so please, someone, if I am wrong, correct me, but it is my understanding that a player that was recently traded CAN NOT be packaged with other players in a NEW deal just days later? Isn't it like a year or something? They can be moved by themselves, but not in a package.

Not only with Foye being a RFA does that kill this supposed deal, but with Heinrich just being traded... absolutely does. Bogus rumor. Has to be 100% made up.

I do not think you are entirely correct on that because if you look at last off-season, Quintin Richardson was traded 4 times within 4 month period. I do not know the exact ruling on it but I know that if anything with CP3 is/was going to happen, it would have to be after July 13th because of the BYC on Paul's contract.

Thanks for the feedback but that's not proof. Richardson was moved by himself and not in conjunction with any other player from his said team during each trade, which goes in line with what I said. A player that has been recently traded can be flipped endlessly BY HIMSELF but he CAN NOT be part of a new trade that involves more players from his new team.
