My stepdad is a happy man today. He worked 42 years for Brush Wellman and authored a few books about metals. He was the one that presented the Webb Telescope with beryllium that's used for it's mirrors. Beryllium is lighter than aluminum but stronger than steel.
He says this telescope in one years time will lead to discoveries we never imagined.

I’ve been following the development of that telescope. I’m very excited to see what we learn from it.

Wonder what happened to cash that Magic recived from trade? Since that's execlly what Buss family only gave for THT. Where he isn't nba starter and for damn sure won't be star, and he is ugly overpayed for what he does, it still doesn't change fact Lakers won trade, as they found somewhat playable player at bottom of second round and.
Another L Magic took in that Jarred Vanderbilt trade. Where that's another player that will never be star, guy is actually pretty damn decent energy spark guy and if you watch any of T wolves games, you will figure he is what Chume fails to be this year ( minus shooting). Switchable 6'9 PF who can defend multiple positions, plays on passing lines, blocks some shots, works his a*** off. And we got Justin Jackson... guy who couldn't make it to our G league roster
We refuse to even draft in second round and in same time filling roster with guys like Chasson Randle, Gary Clark, Frank Mason, Devin Cannady , Robert Franks, BJ Johnson, Mulder.... those mid 20s , no upside nobodies.
And for Lakers, man, if THT is only their problem, they would be 30-4 not 16-18 right now. Westbrook, Jordan, Rondo, IT, Howard... but mainly Westbrook, complete trainwrack. DeAndre' Bembry & Patty MIlls looked like Ray Allen & Paul Pierce last night, they can't defend anything and anybody.

Well... I dunno if its accurate but paying 10m/yr to THT ad cost them the rumored trade of Lowry and the signing of DDR and resigning of Caruso ( again if what the GB said is true ).... thats kind of yikes to me...

I know the roster in total has been injured, young and pretty much terrible but I have not been impressed with Mosley as a head coach. Assistant coach sure he would be good but for a head coach he's too buddy buddy and clap clap great job on a missed shot that had a good pass but won't punish for messing up and will ride a group for too long when they are struggling hoping they can figure it out. Also not happy with the FO and scouting, why trade away so many second round picks? It seems like if it's not a first round pick they can't scout well and even then I think they use a computer to see who has the best numbers. Seeing the Heat with Nunn and now Vincent and Straus they went undrafted and their scouts where able to find them, us we go and get Fraizer and Ford? Why not take a chance on guys in the 2nd round?

He just thinks this telescope will find a lot of new discoveries we never imagined. I'm pretty sure it's designed to be able to find planets that have life on them. He seemed to think it'll be about a year before we know. It'll take a while before it sees as far as it can go. I believe he said it goes the speed of light.Bensational wrote:basketballRob wrote:He seemed pretty positive they'll find life.thelead wrote:I’ve been following the development of that telescope. The Magic for the most part do play hard every night. That's about all you can judge Mosley on at this point IMO.
He's working with extremely limited resources and there's no tangible emphasis organizationally on winning. He's doing what he was brought in to do.

Finding planets that could have life on them is entirely different from actually finding life. We don't even know that life doesn't exist within our own solar system, so I don't know how we'd find definitive evidence of as much by identifying exoplanets.
I don't know what he'd be referring to regarding it "going the speed of light". That isn't possible and it wouldn't help. As I understand it, it is going to settle into an orbit around the sun.
I'm guessing what he is referring to is simply being able to see further, which will allow us to see objects that date further back in time and potentially identifying the conditions of the universe much further in the past. It takes a very long time for the light from distant objects to reach us, so you are effectively looking into the past. The further you can see, the further into the past you are looking. The brightest star (Sirius) is more than 8 light years from us, which means that we are seeing it as it was 8 years ago. Betelguese, the red star at the top left of the Orion constellation, is almost 650 light years away. There was a supernova that was visible around 400 years ago, which was estimated to be a distance between 10,000 to 20,000 light years away, so by the time people on earth were able to see it, it had already been gone for thousands of years.
It will also be better equipped to see things that the Hubble can't see. The colors that we can see don't represent the entirety of the light spectrum. Light in the wavelength range beyond the red end of the spectrum is invisible to us (infrared), but the Webb telescope is equipped to see it.
"Xatticus has always been, in my humble opinion best poster here. Should write articles or something."

I haven't talked with him much about it. He probably meant they'll find planet that could be suitable for life. Plus he's an engineer, not a scientist.Xatticus wrote:basketballRob wrote:He just thinks this telescope will find a lot of new discoveries we never imagined. It sounds like the next mission that'll probably be decades away will be able to determine if the biosphere of the planet is man made or not.
Pretty interestesting reading that the Webb telescope could detect a bumblebee on the moon.
