"I'm having a hard time finding anything wrong with this hire. In fact, you can make the case that this is the best hire for a Group of 5 school since we started calling them a Group of 5."

"Gus Malzahn, I think, kills it at UCF."

"There's nothing negative to say about Gus's recruiting. When you're going against Alabama, head-to-head, 24/7, 365, I think he's done a hell of a job."

Barrett Sallee, College Football Writer

"It's a great hire for UCF. Gus Malzahn will get the Knights back to a New Year's Six Bowl Game, I have absolutely no doubt about this."

"It's kind of ironic: Tennessee hires Josh Heupel away from UCF and UCF still comes in with the better end of the deal."

"I wouldn't be surprised at all if this is a marriage that lasts until Gus Malzahn wants to retire. It does depend on what the fit is at other Power 5 jobs. He's not going to jump to a random Power 5 job that he can't be successful with, there's no doubt in my mind."

"He wants to win. And he understands that he can win, successfully recruiting in south and central Florida. So I think UCF, they didn't get a short-timer; they got a long-term solution as long as the best of the best Power 5 coaching jobs don't open up and even if that does happen, I think it still remains to be seen how attractive he would be to those jobs knowing that sometimes they just wouldn't be good fits for guys who run offenses like Gus."

National media seems to love the hire. More praise from CBS:

We'll see how it goes.

His presser has me psyched now. He says all the right things.

I'm much more optimistic than I was than with Heupel's introduction. The bar is high with this regime.

I hope all these guys are correct about him being the right hire.

I did think it was kinda funny he was trying to reference yardage stats from 2007 though, thats a loooooong time ago man.

And it was CUSA and not the AAC at the time.

He has a chance to define a legacy at UCF by building something new and doing something which has not been done before as the landscape of college football changes with the playoffs being reimagined in the coming years (as I believe it will).

It sounds like he understands that and plans to stay.

What are his other options? Go to a Tier-2 Power 5 like Arkansas or Arizona and get whooped every other week before getting fired in year 3?

I don’t see him getting USC, Michigan or the other top jobs expected to come open in the near future any time soon.

never say never but assuming he's able to move the program forward it does seem like someone that would stick around. With what UCF is paying him + his buyout money he's still sitting pretty for a while. If they can keep the same AD and coach in place for a couple years maybe they really can take it to the next level.

I wonder if they'll see any recruiting benefits this season or if it's too late for that

I think this year is pretty much done for recruiting. Maybe a few walk ons to fill roles maybe?

Transfer portal will be interesting to watch.

Uncommitted players currently in the portal:
https://247sports.com/Season/2021-Football/TransferPortal/?status=uncommitted

Notables:
- #1 RB is from Auburn
- Top 2 WR are from Florida schools
- #1 TE is in Florida
- #5 OL is from Auburn

... keep on going. These are the places I would expect him to attack quickly. Build a team of guys who understand his system quickly and can execute it to a level he expects.

I thought we only had like 2-3 scholarships to offer this cycle left. Doesn’t Gus use a FB in his offense? We’ll need one of those if so

His comments yesterday made it seem that Shannon would not be his first choice so the possibility of running two DC is a way to possibly get Shannon out.. fingers crossed.

Randy Shannon is not coming back.

UCF is on the hook to pay him $1M dollars minus whatever amount he gets from his next job.

That would be good news if he has off-set language in his deal. I don’t know how many schools will be hiring a DC at this point though.

Not sure who this guy is but wanted to give him credit. Burns might make sense given his past with Gus.

I don't think Shannon will get a DC job this late in the process, but I do think he'll get a LB Coach gig for like 300K.

Worst case scenario for UCF is that Shannon takes a defensive analyst job for a year with one of the huge power five schools since those gigs really don't pay much.

Since Gus has already established he's going to call plays, I'd expect him to split the OC role among two position coaches.

Something hypothetically like (not these names necessarily)...

Kodi Burns - Co-OC/WR Coach
Cadillac Williams - Co-OC/RB Coach

There's a rumor going around that UCF is going to hire Herb Hand as OL Coach.

https://twitter.com/CoachHand

TONS of experience at the P5 level and has worked with Gus at multiple spots.

2007–2008 Tulsa (co-OC/OL) - with Malzahn
2009 Tulsa (AHC/OC/OL)
2010–2012 Vanderbilt (OL)
2013 Vanderbilt (RGC/OL)
2014–2015 Penn State (RGC/OL)
2016–2017 Auburn (OL) - for Malzahn
2018–2020 Texas (co-OC/OL)
