If everyone were judged for the decisions they made in college...

Those worried about employing previously fired coaches. Every non-first post coach in the league right now has been fired at some point in their career. So I guess you could argue we should go down the first-timer route and I'd be open to that. There are some great assistants out there: Adams with GSW and Prunty with the Bucks are names I've mentioned before.

No. No. No. No. No.

I can talk myself into getting excited about pretty much any of the candidates discussed so far. But I can't do it for Mark Jackson. This guy is a bum.

I don't know if I'd call him a bum but I certainly agree he's the one I'd be least able to convince myself on.

I think I will worry about the new coach once we hire one. Competency and coherency will be a big step up at this point.

i'm not mad about Skiles. he'll have the team playing defense at least.

and Skiles might only be a short term coach, too. most other teams have had 3 coaches over their rise from rebuild into contender.

tank years - coach 1 (2-3 years)
playoff rise - coach 2 (2 years)
contending - coach 3 (3-5 years)

I'm throwing my weight behind Nate McMillan. None of the names mentioned intrigue me that much, but I was always a fan of how much McMillan got out of those Blazers teams, even with all the crazy injuries. He's coached teams young teams into the playoffs and has some experience with USA Basketball. I think he'd be worth a look.

i had a similar timeline in my head as well

I know we want to have the sustainability of the spurs but the fact of the matter is, coaches are pretty replaceable unless you have coach Pop or carlisle. the next coach will probably be a stop gap guy to get us over the hump and into the playoffs

Along the lines of what I was talking about earlier. Skiles (or whoever is hired next) could very well be the Brian Hill to our next Stan Van Gundy. Skiles gets us as far as he can (1-2 first round exits) before someone else takes us to contender status.

The last time Karl coached a team that ended the season below .500 was 27 years ago... I'll just let that sink in for a minute...

I've heard that part before about this being PT and pastor FT. I'm a Christian but sorry this has to be a FT 48 not 24 hour job. If that's true then bring on Skiles. Other than that I think he would be the best candidate.

Borrego aka Ray Romano was with the Spurs for 7 years. imo he should have been our head coach over JV in the first place. Ownership is a big issue with the Orlando Magic as well. We preached patience and we are not a finished product yet in the least. Ownership is getting all involved now it seems(Speculation) and not letting Hennigan who they hired and talked about taking the slow approach. Its a huge mess. And to top it off the Coaches available all are awful. We are a couple of players away from being alot better.

Nice. Nate is a name I haven't heard mentioned yet, actually. He's solid.

It will be weird if they don't come out and directly say Borrego will be interim through the end of the season. That's what to watch for.

If you think George Karl is an awful coach, you know absolutely nothing about basketball.

Have a big gut feeling it's either going to be Skiles or Jackson. I'd be willing to be on it.

yep. heck, even Carlisle was a stop gap guy at one point in his career (Pistons).

Pop said himself that he likely wouldn't have lasted in SA if they hadn't drafted Duncan.

i reckon that in 2 years time Carlisle himself might be available again... once Dirk retires and that team goes full rebuild.
