Travis Schlenk

Assistant General Manager

Travis Schlenk, 41, is in his 12th season with the Golden State Warriors, and his fifth as assistant general manager. In this role, Schlenk reports directly to General Manager Bob Myers and assists in the management of all day-to-day basketball operations, including all player-related matters.

With more than 16 years of experience in the NBA, Schlenk has held jobs at virtually every level of basketball operations, including positions in the video room, on the bench, scouting and in the front office.

Prior to being promoted to his current position, Schlenk spent the previous two seasons as the team’s director of player personnel. In that role he assisted in all player personnel matters, while also assisting with trade & free agent discussions, player contracts, salary cap analysis and adherence to Collective Bargaining Agreement rules and regulations.

Before joining the team’s front office, Schlenk spent five years as an assistant coach and video scout for the Warriors. His duties in that role included the preparation of scouting reports for the coaching staff and players, assisting on-court at practice sessions and working with players on individual skill development. Additionally, Schlenk has also assisted with the team’s advance scouting duties.

Schlenk joined the Warriors prior to the 2004-05 season as a video scout after spending the previous four years as the video coordinator for the Miami Heat. Prior to joining the Heat, he was an assistant coach at the University of Georgia during the 1998-99 season under Ron Jirsa. Schlenk’s introduction to the NBA came as a member of the Orlando Magic’s basketball operations staff during the 1997-98 campaign.

A native of Selden, Kansas, Schlenk earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Management & Human Ecology from Bethel College, where he was also a member of the school’s basketball team. After graduation from Bethel, he received a Masters of Education with an emphasis in Sports Administration from Wichita State University.

Travis and his wife, Sarah, currently reside in Oakland with their daughters, Morgan and Charlotte, and son, Will.

Now this is the exact type of guy that has already had experience in a front office that I want to go after. I don't want anymore novices. This guys seems to fit the bill. Hopefully we give him serious consideration when Henny is fired.

Awesome. A GM with a legitimate scouting background, front office experience with a team that has a championship pedigree, and a face that looks like Maverick's boss in Top Gun who says, "I won't tolerate your shiiit".

He looks very intriguing! Should be an interview for the Magic job. Dude, looks like a bald Vladimir Putin.

Schlenk sounds good. He comes from a winning team that has done well attracting free agents and drafting well even though they have late positions in the draft. He's my instant favourite.

You are a Doc Rivers apart from not being relevant the next 10 years easily.

I'll be the contrarian. That bio is really just a bunch of fluff. You can come up with something comparable for any number of front office personnel (Hennigan included). Basketball is filled with basketball people. The position of General Manager requires a specific set of skills that are entirely independent from scouting and coaching. It's pretty standard for teams to poach from more successful organizations, but the results are generally disappointing when you are swiping assistants. It's possible that he would make a fine GM and he is probably a worthy candidate for an interview, but nothing in that description gives me confidence that he possesses those specific skills required to excel as a GM in the NBA.

Even if they want to keep Rob Hennigan, they are going to have to make a change after 5 bad seasons.

A new GM will come in and someone like Pat Garrity is a possibility.

Doc Rivers might come back one day to coach but conflicts between Rivers and John Gabriel over personal cost both of them their jobs last decade. That was a disasterous drafting period as well.

I do not think Doc rivers will come back this summer and expect Frank Vogel to stay.

It's going to be an interesting summer.

Hennigan created the circumstances that have led to his demise. I don't believe the draft luck argument has merit. It's also a major assumption that we would've drafted Embiid if he were available when we picked. It was known that he was going to miss at least a year and it was fairly common knowledge that the Magic were drafting Gordon fourth (the Kings certainly knew in advance).

I don't hate Hennigan, but I do believe he is in over his head. I think he has certain skills that are very useful, but I don't believe he is well-equipped to perform the duties of general manager; at least for this organization.

I'm intrigued by Garrity, but I simply don't have enough information to say whether I believe it would be a good hire or not. I think it is a necessity that the modern GM has more than a passing familiarity with analytics and he would seem to be well-schooled in NBA finances and asset management. I don't know how well he is with regards to negotiation or long-term planning. I'm not a fan of Danny Ferry, but it is fairly obvious that he is pretty good at those skills.

I like Dumars a lot as a person, but I'm not keen on the idea of him becoming our next GM. That said, I'd much rather have Dumars than Rivers, given what I know.

In terms of The Draft, the bad luck was probably more about 2015 and weaker drafts in 2013 and 2014.

I did feel he should have traded down in 2013 and still would not have given into Hinkie's ransom in 2014. I also do not think they would have taken Embiid.

2015 might turn out to be what sunk Hennigan as Hezonja has been slow to develop while Devin Booker has been great. I would have taken Cauley-Stein who would have solved the need for a defensive big. Myles Turner has also turned out to be good.

What happened this summer is probably the nail in the coffin with trying to play AG at 3.

Hennigan also did not master the asset management part and we are rightfully going to see a change in leadership here.

I'll board the Schlenk train, just have to becareful, because Perry, Lloyd and Hennigan may all have similar resumes and experiences and look where that got us.
I want a hard plan AND an overlying FO strategy/philosophy for when the hard plan falls with bad luck like it does for 29 out of 30 teams.
Oh, and I'd also want the biggest scouting department in the league. Top 5-10 is the starting point at least.

Have to agree with this. Until we learn more about him all we can do is speculate about his accomplishments. What exactly did he do, and how did he contribute to GS success? What initiatives did he take, and how successful were they?

Hennigan is a little different as he's known Presti since high school, which is how he got to work with him right out of college in SA.

I know how this board gets but I am just going to pass the information. I have a close friend that worked for the Magic up until year 1 of the Henny era and now he is a high level employee with another NBA franchise but still has close ties within our building. I spoke to him this morning to get information about possible GM replacements and he told me without hesitation that Schlenk "sucks and is worse than Rob." Now just so you know before talking to him I was semi hype about Schlenk. I totally trust his word as he ended up being right about Rob, Jock, Scott as well as other info. I'm just giving this info not to be pessimistic but to temper our expectations on Schlenk being our TRoss like savior. Seems to me that the Devos family still have their work cut out for finding a potential replacement. We may need to go speak to someone over at Korn Ferry like Jed Hughes to assist us in our search so we don't mess it up again and be in a decade long holding pattern.

I was just about to say this. Until we add a President of Basketball Operations and effectively remove Martins from making any basketball related decisions, it wont matter who we hire as a GM. We need a basketball guy at both PBO and GM. I think thats the change that needs to be made. I dont think Martins will ever be fired but he does need to be removed from that role.
