If Moe will take the BAE at $5.1M, that would be good.

(Would still require the Magic to dump salary if they use the full MLE)

Do you know the exact number (give or take) of how much they need to dump in order to use the full MLE AND sign Wagner to a decent realistic figure?

Declining Mo and Caleb means the fo isn't done making moves for the roster. Maybe some sort of trade is still on the horizon to move out more room to get the full MLE and have enough to keep Mo

I find it a little weird that 3 Michigan players in Florida are without contracts at the same time. Caleb, Duncan Robinson, and Moe. I'm think maybe Caleb and the other Michigan player Jett get traded for Robinson.

The Magic are currently $14.5M under the first apron.

If they use the entire mid-level, they will be just 400K under the first apron and will be hard capped at that amount.

They would need to punt Jett into someone’s cap space, or trade Isaac or Goga for someone making less than they make now, and hope Moe would be willing to take the BAE which is 5.1M.

There’s also some alternatives where they could punt Jett, then re-sign Moe for an amount that doesn’t take them back above the tax and then use part, but not all of their MLE.

Either way there are more moves coming.

The only real way to retain Moe at anything close to his current salary *and* use the full MLE would be to punt Isaac into someone’s TPE (Kings?).

Surprised we cut Caleb and his cheap salary... Seems like a slip up to me.

The most simple outcome is the Magic sign a free agent for $5.7M in year 1, which would not trigger the hard cap, then use bird rights to retain Moe and Caleb on long-term deals.

If they resign him for his minimum, it will be for almost the same amount he was set to make. No worries there.

I guess if they have some sort of a wink-wink deal in place it makes sense.

Booooo we declined Caleb’s $2m option. Honestly, that is cheap. I was hoping we could retain him.

As it stands right now, the odds are much higher right now on Caleb returning than Moe returning.

Caleb can be brought back pretty easily even if the Magic use the full MLE.

It will be a lot tricker to retain Moe if they use the MLE.

I expect to bring him back on a longer deal with similar salary. Of course that is IF we are able to renegotiate with Mo a longer deal with a paycut. Very big IF. We will see how strong the family discount is.

Gives them the option to go for a free agent with MLE if they strike out they bring Moe and Calab back

Precisely.

My guess is that they have 1 and potentially 2 guys they're willing to give the full MLE (speculation: NAW for sure and Jerome maybe) and if one of them says yes, they'll go for it.

If neither of them say yes, I think they pivot to the 5.7M option - likely Tyus Jones - and then bring back Moe and Caleb.

My official prediction...

Sign Tyus Jones to a 2-year, 11.6M deal.

Resign Moritz Wagner to a 2 year deal for less AAV than the $11M he was going to make.

Resign Caleb Houstan to a 2 year deal for slightly more AAV than the $2.2M he was going to make.

G: Suggs, Jones, Richardson
G: Bane, Black, Howard
F: F. Wagner, Houstan/TDS (whichever order you prefer)
F: Banchero, Isaac, Penda
C: Carter, Bitadze, M. Wagner

Maybe a mid season trade if needed. I feel good about the above.

I MUCH prefer this ^ over getting NAW or Ty but losing Mo or JI in the process. You know I've been on the Tyus bandwagon for a long time now though.
