The next NBA TV deal for the 2025 season is targeting a $75B price tag.

I think we all remember what happened to the salary cap and spending the last time we had a new TV deal. That agreement was only $24B.

We should all circle the 2025 season and the pending free agent class. We don’t want to end up with another Biz situation.

I don't think they'll get close to that. ESPN was already firing everyone because they were hemorrhaging money. Let that sink in. Disney-backed ESPN was hemorrhaging money.

Amazon purchased exclusive rights to Thursday night football in the new $100B+ NFL TV deal. I guarantee Amazon wants in on NBA games.

This deal also includes ABC, NBC, CBS, TNT and new streaming options (Facebook and more).

Also, Disney+ had not been launched when Disney / ESPN was struggling at the heigh of the pandemic. As we get closer to this agreement being signed you will have theme parks opened up, arenas and ball parks full, movie theaters packed and Disney+ is a cash cow.

So don’t be so sure ...

The Forbes crowd has the negotiations settling on ~70B. That is still a three-fold jump in the salary cap in one year.

At least management can plan for this now in how new FA contracts are constructed.

Reflectively, average players will make 5M a year. MLE-types will make 15M per, near all-stars 30M per, marginal all-stars 40M per, just-max players in the 50-60M per level, and the league's 5 best players could be getting 100 million dollars per year.

Slow down.

They’re not going to let the cap spike that high in one single year.

They are going to stagger it over a few seasons. Otherwise it would be complete chaos. It’s going to be madness regardless when all teams have room to spend just as it was last time but it has to be gradual madness.

The league is negotiating a new CBA. And I am sure this will come up.

But it came up last time and the players' union simply wanted the cash - now.

We will see; but the owners do have more power than the players right now. i.e. you are probably correct.

Still, by 2030, there is probably going to be an NBA player making USD$100,000,000.00 per year.

Oh they will get their cash. The owners can’t just keep it all and give it to the players later.

But if you just raise that cap and dump it into free agency then that hurts players on existing long term deals. Vets can plan around that with deals they sign but what about rookies in the 2014 and so on?

They will need to spread it out creatively among the players with the CBA while gradually (but still drastically) increasing the cap.

But yes, I don’t think anyone doubts salaries will be much higher.

It wasn’t long ago that a player making $30M a year would shock us. Now we have guys making well over $40M. In the NFL you have a $500M contract.

The owners made this point last time there was a big bump, and suggested a "fair" smoothing process. The players outright refused and used the CBA to immediately max out their deals at the front end.

What's new here is that the CBA is being negotiated before the TV deal. It could include a smoothing-clause. It's not like the owners can keep this money after all, as a percentage of income must be given to players in salary.

I definitely think the owners and GMs would *prefer* a gradual cap increase, but I don’t see any incentive whatsoever for the NBAPA to accept a staggered cap increase.

Considering the owners will be reaping their share of the rewards of all that new revenue immediately regardless of there’s a rolling cap increase or not, I suspect the players will want the exact same thing and the owners will be willing to bend on that just like they were in 2016.

The players aren’t going to go for anything that may potentially cost some of them money (guys later in their careers and guys on the fringe especially) in the name of any sort of competitive balance, that’s for sure.

We must always remember that professional athletes are on another level. White Mamba is 43! In my country basketball is not very relevant, but soccer players from the fourth division can obliterate cocky amateur players with high self-esteem. I've seen this happen once.

How can they demand that much? Doesn't make sense. TV ratings have been going down. The legacy cable model is going down the drain and there are far more options for entertainment available for the public.

Indeed it is!!

And the tech monopolies swooping in to fill the gap have more money and imagination than what came before could have ever dreamt of. It’s a new world and this world is expensive.

Good thing to me about rebuild is that i can finally go back and watch some good teams play and not pay much attention to Orlando.

Man, James Harden is MVP i will be upset if he is not winning this.
Guy is amazing ,freaking amazing this year.

No KD, no Irving no problem, Harden is there.
NO KD, Irving is hot, no problem Harden will serve 15 assist.
KD is there , Irving is there, no problem, will only shoot 12-14 times.

This man changed himself.

Only the 1st quarter, but LaVine looks like he hasn’t any idea how to work with Vuc. Keeps setting him up in terrible positioning. Lot more time to go this game for them to figure it out.

Vuc and Sato seem to have clicked pretty well.

Vuc locked in on defense for them, too.
