I'm not saying he can't be great but damn, I just don't see it. He will probably be a solid starter but a solid starter is not what we tanked for. Go big or go home. Swing for that star. Vonleh has to have the least star potential of the top 7.

This guy is a second rounder without that combine.

Player A is Kyle O'Quinn and player B is Vonleh.

By reading about vonleh's shot blocking on here it would have you thinking he's out there blocking shots like a prime Hakeem :-?

Here is a video of full possessions of Vonleh playing defense. I'm posting it because I don't think people have actually seen him defensively (or offensively for that matter) and are just making assumptions on what they want him to be or what scouting reports say he might be able to be. I'm not going to say anything positive or negative and let people watch and evaluate for themselves.

Embiid, Smart, Randle, Parker...their impact was so blatantly obvious ALL season long when you WATCHED them actually PLAY.

Guys like Wiggins, Vonleh just didn't even come close.

I'm curious why Doug McDermott isn't headlining that list of yours.

We like some sort of athleticism here in Orlando. And no, don't come at me with measurements and verts (I think he actually had a decent combine vert IIRC).

We also like versatile players. McDermott is the closest thing to being 1 dimensional. I would take a look at him at 12 though.

But, wasn't McDermott's impact blatantly obvious as well?

Because there is no way any team is building an entire offense around a strictly catch and shoot player like his father did. If no team/coach is going to allow him and only him to shoot a million times a game like his dad coach did, his opportunity to impact (he only has ability to impacts in one way/the others do not) is clearly going to take a major hit.

Sounds familiar..... I didnt think watching the player play was necessary around here.

Where did Kyle O'quinn go to college and what level of competition did he play over there?

Yet years later he is putting up similar per40 numbers in the NBA logging significant minutes against NBA starters.

Is there a draft pick that isnt a gamble? you never select someone for his current ability but for what you think he can become and with Vonleh you know he has the right attitude that will make him likely to realize his potential.

Besides, he is already a very good rebounder and has one of the highest floors in this draft imo, so if anything I think its a very safe pick.

Wait am I reading this right? Dipo's Junior year was his best year. By a lot. It's not even close. He only played 18mpg his freshman year. I don't get what you are saying.

What I meant is, Vonleh is way ahead of where Oladipo was in his freshman year and he seem to have a similar commitment to improve his game so while he doesnt look like BPA at #4 now, I think he has a good chance to become that or even better, and at the very least I think he can become a solid starter for a contender, which is more than I can say about anyone else in this draft not named Jabari Parker.

i miss the days when players coming into the NBA were much more finished products. Not 18-19 yr olds that you hoped developing into a good player.

Pretty sure Hennigan scouts these players more than most of us combined. He hasn't had a WTH moment yet in terms of evaluating talent...so I'm comfortable with whatever we do in the draft until I have a reason not to be. Just because you don't like a player doesn't mean he's going to be a bust.

He is definitely raw as there were a few possessions where he was not contesting well on attempts in the mid post (didn't raise his hands) and there were a few possessions that he got lost off the ball ( saw some similar stuff with Randle that worries me). However, like Randle, he has a strong base and can compete with his combo of strength, agility and length. If we draft him, let's hope he ramps his motor up a bit. We've seen his motor on the boards, now he needs to transfer that to a concerted effort on his team defense and ISO defense.

As far as contesting shots, it seems evident to me that he won't be an elite rim protector, but he can certainly be a serviceable to above average one. He contested a decent amount of shots at Indiana and led a solid defensive unit. He does have problems as the times I saw him play, he would bite a bit on fakes and pick up some ticky tack fouls. Defensive awareness is something he along with most 18-19 year olds need to improve.

I am a relatively optimistic about his defensive potential because coach Crean has spoken very highly of Vonleh and his drive and work ethic. He has shown a motor on the defensive glass and displays a great combonation of lateral quickness and length that I really appreciate in a prospect. I would be ok with Henny drafting him as long as he thinks he is BPA and we can get a solid PG of the future ie (Exum, Smart, Payton).

Thanks for the video Neon!
