Small market, bad team, poorly assembled in the inverse to ours (all guards and then a mediocre frontcourt with 2 very large vet salaries). Let's help them out of cap hell, so they can really get moving on their rebuild...clinging to Simons while Shaedon and Scoot are the future makes no sense...they should cash in AND get off his salary. I'm sure they value him, but he'll be ready for a bigger new deal (due to inflated tank numbers) right when Sharpe and Scoot are ready to take his minutes and role....

1. Let Harris, Fultz, Okeke, Goga walk
2. Trade DEN 25 frp, ORL 26 frp (top 5), Cole Anthony, Jett Howard, Joe Ingles to POR for Simons, Rob Williams, & Brogdon
-POR hopes Cole can fill Simons' role (enough) for half the money...Jett might be an offensive star. Mostly tons of cap/tax savings
-ORL weaponizes their short-term cap space for a big one-year deal, a middling 2 years of an injured big, and Simons
....if Time Lord is healthy, ORL's defense gets even better - play him very limited minutes like we did with Isaac and see.
the expectation is that he's dead salary and taking him is a big savings to POR and not a big deal for ORL. If he comes
around, Weltman is Exec of the Year and Mose has another eraser to play with. If not, just money - we're still better.
...Brogdon can still really play and it's just one year - he'll be off the books when first rookie extensions kick in
...Simons drops right in to the starting backcourt and lights it up...maybe best fit of anyone in the league.

Isaac,Time Lord (?), M. Wagner
Paolo, WCJ, M. Wagner
Franz, Black, Houstan (24 frp?)
Suggs, Brogdon, Houstan
Simons, Black, Brogdon

(so many combos as just about everyone is multi-positional...much better shooting and guard play, much deeper defensively). AB, in particular, can get quality minutes at point forward (where Ingles plays now) due to his size and ability to defend up. He'd be able to play with more prolific scorers in Brogdon & Simons, to balance his skillset while he continues to grow. Having WCJ backing up 4/5 would be tremendous...and pairing him (or Mo) with Isaac and/or Williams is another nice balance to let WCJ do his thing offensively.

*Not sure of value...I figure Simons is at least 2 frps, Brogdon is 1, TimeLord negative value...how much value to getting them out of the tax. Maybe need to add another frp or (happily) a handful of srps?

I would say there is a very little chance that this front office would want Simons much less give up assets for him. His D EPM is second worst in the whole league at -3.2. He is about 20% worse than the next lowest guy who gets significant minutes. More perspective is Cole Anthony is -0.8 and he gets hunted. Now his offensive number is high but he is still at a net negative. That’s before getting into his size (though he does have a decent wingspan). I probably get your perspective that look were so good on defense we can afford to take a risk on a glass cannon lol. I don’t think the FO sees it that way because especially in the playoffs your weakest link can be just hunted and based on his history he might be one hell of a weak link.

You can disagree with FO approach but their vision has been very much communicated and clear. They want to have a top 5 defensive team and hopefully get the offense to 10-15 to reach contention. It’s a bet that the league is going to try and push advantages back to the defense. We are seeing that start to happen. Scoring and offense has really gotten out of hand. Will they get serious about that and have it persist? History would say probably not but this time it feels different. The offense needs to improve but my guess based on FO history that they won’t sacrifice defense significantly to do it.
Fine print disclaimer for Fultz:
I am high on Markelle Fultz. Yes I understand he is not perfect and needs to shoot more and better and turn the ball over less. I would really like to see him play one more year… and I did and he sucks time to move on.

and yet we draft Jett Howard, bad defender. We re-sign Cole, bad defender. We sign Ingles who really cant defend anyone anymore. We play Mo Wagner a lot, who is a bad defender. So, that vision isnt really complete

LOL, none of those guys are even in the same area code as Simons in terms of bad defense. That is what EPM says, it is also what the eye test says. To say he is a traffic cone gives traffic cones a bad name. To say his defense is YMCA level, is not accurate. It is worse than YMCA level.

Simons D is so bad one wonders if he is trying to be bad just to get out of Portland.

Ok but I think everyone agreed with the 11 pick we needed a shooter. Jett had the best size and most of the shooters in that draft were terrible defenders. George is at bottom on DEPM, Dick and Hawkins also not great defenders. I see the Jett pick as part of the vision. He has size and could become a better defender.

As for the others yes they are not great but outside of Anthony are any of those guys going to close games for us in playoffs? And Anthony probably shouldn’t if we had a more reliable PG. Look you can’t have a team with all plus defenders and expect to be anywhere close to good enough offensively. Some trade offs will happen. My point is the magnitude of bad Simons is. Like 3x worse than even our poor defenders. I just don’t see us giving up assets for him. And I don’t think they should. What does it say about a guy where defense is a lot about effort and he literally plays like he could give a rats ass. He is athletic enough he could get himself to the -1.0 range. How much has Mosley preached defensive identity? Simon just to me doesn’t fit the culture they are trying to build.

Fortune telling is fun, I love it! Do you use crystal ball, tarot cards or tea leaves? I unfortunately lack all of the above and have to rely on mere perceptible on-court actions. Sadly, it produces different results.

Portland are poor defensive team, how much of it is Anfernee and how much - the team? Put Cole there and let see how much of a defender he is going to be. If Simmons get the chance to play in Orlando he'll up his effort, he is local boy and he'll be playing meaningful basketball.
Simmons is third in NBA in 3-pointers made per game this season on 39%. Last year he was 7th. If you wonder where Cole is ranked, outside top 100 - 167 actually.
Can we stop harping on players defensive skills for a second. Our offense and 3pt record are pretty far from great, we can trade a bit of deffense for offense.

CJ has gotten worse since turning 28, but until then he was mostly league average or slightly below.

Simons is in a completely different Area Code. EPM has him spending most of his career as a -3+ DEPM. This matches the eye test. CJ has never once in his career, even as he ages, been as low as a -2.

People rationalize Simons all that they want and say it is possible he could improve in another environment.

Yes, it is possible.

It is also possible that monkeys could also fly out of my but (a quantum theory possibility), but it is not very probable.

i will also say, a lot of defensive stats are reliant on the team on the floor and Portland has never had a good defensive team.

This is true and the hardest thing about defensive stats. But again the number is so bad is says something. Like let’s take Corey Kispert who plays on the worst defensive team. He is more than a full point better. Why can’t just effort alone Simons be on Kispert’s level?

I am high on Markelle Fultz. Yes I understand he is not perfect and needs to shoot more and better and turn the ball over less. I would really like to see him play one more year… and I did and he sucks time to move on.

This is why a potential Claxton signing makes so much sense.

The identity is defense with a player like Paolo who grinds you out of the game.

We have 4 more years of this via the coach extension. I don't know how much harder it can be telegraphed.

I am fairly confident based on who was on the board, we picked up Black and immediately said he is defensively ready draft night.

We have 2 offensive spark plug types
Mo, Cole (in a horrible down year).

To imagine anything else or that we wont double down on it, feels.....off.

AB replaces Fultz
Jett replaces Harris
Tyus replaces Cole
Claxton replaces WCJ
Caleb replaces Ingles

Sweet dreams

Still in the Claxton train? I thought the Brooklyn game would fix that

hahaha... like WCJ heard these comments and took it personally....... TWICE. I'd rather resign Goga. He does majority of the same stuff.... just not as great on the perimeter.... and could be had for a fraction of the cost most likely.

I honestly want someone to write all of this down and put it on Goga / WCJ wall.

That's right, we are watching you!

Offer all of our 1st round picks, 2nd round picks, and use ALL CAP MONEY to purchase a time machine and prevent JI from getting hurt. Let the rest of history play out the way it did, and when we get back to 2023-2024 we will have the real JI and all is good in the world. We just need to find that time machine....
