Exciting to hear "the game is slowing down" for him. Being super quick is negated if you're always moving super quick. Change of pace is what makes it tough to guard. He said the right things about prep & film for the MEM game. He could be relevant this year...as much as any of the guards.
Before the Suggs and Franz picks I would have argued that RJ had as much upside as anybody on this team, and i am sure I did. It was always going to take him a long time as he was so raw.
The shooting was the concern coming in, and he's worked hard at. He shot 38% last year until April when he shot 26%.
He's been wildly inconsistent in the area of the game you would think he would excel...At the rim. 66% as a rookie and 53% last year. He needs to learn how to play under control and finish at the rim and in the paint. It may take him another year or so, but i don't see any reason why he can't be a starting 2 guard with good size and athleticism, that can also be on ball as a secondary playmaker.
I think we are really underestimating him after the egg he laid last year. A lot of these young athletic guards take longer to come around. Simons was atrocious through three years, and broke out in a big way last year. The difference here is RJ might actually turn into a good defender, that and RJ is just entering year 3.
With RJ patience was, and maybe is, always/still the key. We can't speak with such absolution on these young guys. It takes time. Players peak on average at 26-27 not 19.
